"National Stereotypes A Myth" - BBC

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 6th October 2005, 23:54

The BBC news site is quoting a report in Science that US researchers have discovered there is little accuracy in national stereotypes.

No s***!

For my twopennethworth, stereotypes are a useful shorthand for national traits when used in a strictly humourous context, but should not be taken seriously outside of that context. Ideally within the context they should be intelligently subverted rather than used verbatim, which would indicate laziness on the joke-teller (or more seriously some casual prejudice).

Now doesn`t that sound more sensible than anything the boffins in the news item could come up with? And I`m half asleep.

Is this the nation of onion sellers who ride bicycles, wear a beret and a blue and white hooped shirt, smell of garlic, don`t wash or shave under their arms and smoke Gauloise cigarettes? ;)

Scots - Short Arms, Deep Pockets. Drunken pub Fighters
Welsh - Thick leek eaters
Irish - Drunken, thick

I think that covers all the home nations. Whats the stereotype of the english? (I dont really know since english people never really tell jokes about the english).

A scots guy in our office tells me we are regarded as `Whiny, Poofy, Shandy Drinkers`.

Anything else?

As I sit here in my kilt, drinking a pint of cheap whisky, counting my collection of half pence pieces,I am angered that you tea drinking bowler hat wearing Englishmen should make scurrilous generalisations about the pride of Scotland.

Och aye the noo
