47,000 Pubs from a possible 52,500 will be opening late to 1.00am or 24 hours opening from November 24th.

I DECLARE NOVEMBER 24TH A HOLIDAY and possibly the 25th (with any luck).

This country is going down the toilet.

Are you sure you arent confusing that number with the number of pubs that have had to re-apply for a license? Because its been mandatory regardless of if you wanted to open late.

Additionally, Im of the opinion that it wont send the country down the toilet. I think it will be short term pain for long term gain.

Initially, some people will give themselves liver damage supping ale 24/7. But this skimming of the gene pool wont be such a bad thing. After the novelty has worn off I think (hope?) we will move to a more measured continental style of drinking, that wont revolve around cramming as much as you can down your neck before closing time.

All the european people ive met over here have a really hard time getting their heads around it. Im sure that, long term, this will help curb problem drinking.

Oh no, the "Friday Night Specials" days are numbered.... ;)

I feel incredibly sorry for anyone staying near a boozer.
At least you were confident of peace and quiet after a certain time.
One could argue "tough for moving near a pub",but one must also remember it`s government that have moved the goalposts.

Only 1 pub has applied for a 24hr licence, the others only want late licences to midnight / 1am, so i wouldn`t book your leave just yet. However, both tesco and Asda have confirmed they plan on selling booze around the clock at the majority of their stores (the 24hr ones basically!)

Bet the old bill are happy!

I just hope the pubs and clubs will contribute to extra policing and not joe public!

Wasn`t this to stop all the drunken yobos all spilling out onto the streets at the same time each evening?

Thats the Idea. At the old Eclipse nightclub in derby a riot van and a few squad cars parked up there at 1.30 every Friday and Saturday night, rain or shine. You cant tell me that would have been needed if people had been allowed to just sod off when they got bored.

Like i said, yeah, it may well be hell in the short term, but long term I would venture that anyone living near a pub will get *less* noise pollution as smaller groups drift out at staggered times.

A girl in our office begs to differ.
At the moment she can be `on edge` until 0100,at which point the street becomes very quiet and she can `switch off` for the night.
She`s terrified the club she stays near will ask for 24 hour licensing as she then doesn`t have a time at which she knows the street will become quiet.
Noisy individuals/groups could be drifting into her street all night. :/

She also argues that trouble will increase.
At the moment,there is a big police presence at 0100,so there is little trouble.
It`s unlikely a police presence will stay there all night,so what`s to stop small groups fighting/jumping on cars/p***ing in doorways,all bleeding night long ?

She`d rather have a controlled closing than an uncontrolled `drifting` and I must admit I agree with her.
