Countryside Alliance & Prejudice...

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Friday, 15th July 2005, 22:31

Popped along to the County Show at Detling today (Nice and warm, had to do a 30-mile detour on the way home as a cement truck went over on the M20), we had a small break under some trees, unfortunately, it was right beside the Countryside Alliance stand, and quite frankly, some of the stuff coming out of the PA system made my bile rise.

The main thing they seemed to be harping on about that the Fox-Hunting ban was that the Goverment was prejudiced against `Country folk` and `their ways`. I still see `Fight Prejudice, Fight the Ban` posters around my way.

prej·u·dice ( P ) Pronunciation Key (prj-ds)
n.

1. An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.
2. A preconceived preference or idea.
3. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgments or convictions.
4. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.
.

Now, i`m sorry, but as much as we might fault the Govt, you have to admit that Laws in this country don`t get passed without a hell of a lot of research.

1. Foxes get chased, then killed and eaten. or eaten alive before the dog handlers get in. This is orchestrated by men in nice red jackets on horses, who spend enough money to feed an African village for a month on this exercise, and they gain absolutely nothing at the end, apart from a bit of exercise, even though they`re sitting on horses. At least the dogs get a bit of a run. Knowledge or examination of the facts? What else do you need to know?

The effect it`ll have on the countryside economy? Fox-hunting is non-profit. Those that work on Fox-Hunts are paid out of the pockets of wealthy landowners. It seems to me that, as absurd as it may sound, that some people are simply looking for an excuse to spend money.
Foxes kill chickens etc... Try building better defences around your poultry. Digging a trench 30cm down, laying the fence in the trench then filling it in keeps foxes out.
The `Class` Arguement. Sorry, but there is some credence to this point. But it isn`t us lower classes having a go just because you`re `toffs` (pardon the expression). It`s simply because, having looked at your pastime from an objective view, we cannot understand any justification for it. The only explanations we`ve been given are `It`s what we`ve always done` (as was slavery and lobotomies without anasthetic) and the classic `Townies don`t understand country ways` which is, quite frankly, insulting and deeply patronising. I live in the country. I used to work on a farm. Nope, still don`t get how that explains animal cruelty

2&3 are pretty much the same as 1

4. Suspicion or hatred of a particular group? I really hope this isn`t the kind of prejudice they`re referring to, if they are, it`s no better than travellers illegally setting up site on land that isn`t theirs, then claiming `Ethnic Cleansing` when they`re moved on. (Meridian News, June 2003)

MODS: sorry about this one. I really had to get it off my chest. Hope I haven`t started a whole Can/Worms thing.

Well reasoned POV & fits in with my own.

If foxes are vermin (& I would agree with that POV), there most be better & more humane ways of controlling the situation than wearing silly outfits & riding roughshot (trespass) through peoples lands, blowing their horns & the pack hounds killing their pets (well documented) before those in control finally deign to show up.

I can sympathise with those whose livihoods depend on it, but I can`t condone the practise.

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

Just because research is done in support of Laws, that doesn`t mean it can`t be flawed or wrong.

This is not necessarily a view on your points above.

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

I would like to add that I do agree with the fact that Foxes are indeed, vermin, and need to be controlled by any humane methods necessary.

Something the Countryside Alliance/fox hunters go on about that REALLY pi*ses me off me is when the say we will have to put down all the hound packs if hunting was banned. (funny, they have`nt done it yet have they?)

Since these caring people care so much, why does every hunt put down heathly happy hounds every year.

Easy, for every new hound pup that joins the pack, an older still healthy hound is put to death years ahead of its time to keep the pack numbers the same.
Now that`s what I call really caring about the hounds.

Cracking toast, Gromit!

... If found, please return this person to the insane asylum, as it would really annoy them if you do that

I 100% agree they are vermin, our ex-chickens and coy-carp are testament (sp) to that, but I belive they should be shot or culled, the chase from horse and hound IMHO is cruel, as vermin as they are (from a westcountry POV), no aminal deserves torture, at the end of the day they are just trying to survive like other animal but they must be dealt with when they become a menace (same POV with badgers who tipped over our steel bins with bricks on top! And seagulls who have caused many blood injuries in local Gloucester) in a humane fashion.

We are the majority. And they are the people in charge in a democracy. :)

Are you sure? On either count?

BTW, wasn`t there a majority of people against the war in Iraq? How did that work then?
