What TV?

jedirobbie (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 13th September 2000, 16:49

I currently own a 28`` regular TV.
to get the most out of any DVD should i upgrade to a widescreen? or would 28`` be sufficient?
i am thinking of getting discs such as Ghostbusters and Mystery Men, they are both only available in Widescreen. Should this make a difference?
Thanks
Rob

28" is just about big enough to get away with it, but I really would consider a widescreen. You only notice the difference once you`ve got it.

Toshiba currently do 28" widescreens at around the £500 mark if you shop around, as do Phillips. I`d be wary of cheapo ones, as they tend to lack decent inputs/outputs, have `curvy` screens, and limited picture sizing options.

Picture sizing options are essential in order to switch between anamorphic and non-anamorphic DVD`s, as well as getting a good comprimise 4:3 on 16:9 picture (cropping a bit off the top & bottom so people don`t look too squished on eastenders!)

about widescreens, I have seen a Goodmans 28`` for just under £300 but this is only NICAM stereo. There is a Samsung 28`` for £400 and that includes Dolby Pro Logic. 5 speaker set.
Would this be a good choice?

If you plan on going Dolby Digital, you`ll end up never using the Pro Logic sound. However if this will be a while before you can afford to, then Pro Logic would do for a bit.
