Having just been browsing ebay dvd sales (yes I know SAD) what do they mean when they say a film is "Div X"

DIVX is Microsofts format for video, and therefore they have all rights.
It is basically SVCD mpeg2 quality video, but takes up half the discspace
I think.
It is really mpeg4.
no dvd players support it as they would need an MS license.
the reason people like it is because you can fit a 2 disc SVCD on a 1 CDR.

You can only watch it on your PC if it has Media Player 6.5 or above and DivX player loaded. It just mean it is a copy of DVD on a CD-R. Don`t buy it.
DivX ;-) (Note the smiley) is, as has been pointed out, a hacked version of a Microsoft codec. Divx (without the smiley) was a rental based competitor to DVD that failed miserably. For more info check http://www.fightdivx.com/divx.htm
