Page 1 of New Films- a bit dissapointing arent they?

Just watch hollow man and galaxy quest today. They were a bit average wernt they? Recent movies have been really disapointing. You dont see many films that you aww after seeing them. Recent Films that i did aww after seeing were pitch black and castaway. I havent seem crouching tiger yet but i assume that that would also be one of them. Last summer was a bit dull as well. MI2, x men, perfect storm all average. Gladiator is way over rated. but its times like these that a film like that picks up best film. I remember a few years ago one magical summer that gave us Notting Hill, Matrix, the Mummy, Star Wars 1, Austin powers two. 5 hit movies in the space of 2 months. Snatch and erin brokovitch were also great and enjoyable recently but no other movies stick in my mind

I haven`t seen Hollow Man, but I got Galaxy Quest R1 when it came out and it had me in tucks, but then I`m an ex-Trekkie and it appealed to my sense of humour.

You are absolutely right about the current box office and movies coming out both sides of the Atlantic. There`s nothing to my taste coming out at the moment, although I loved Charlie`s Angels and Bedazzled. I`m not a great one for horror, war or American Teen movies. I`m of the generation that used to go to the cinema to see Indiana Jones, 007, or the good old blockbuster movies. Where are movies like that now? Family movies especially (and I don`t mean saccharine stuff like The Little Vampire).

I would agree with you in same cases! The films of 2000 were a bit average but I did like Beeing John Malkovich, Three Kings, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, X-Men and Gladiator!
Anyhow, in terms of movies to lookforward to in the summer, I think this year might be a little better then the last. Especially when you take a look at the line up of movies to look forward to.

New films will always be dissapointing as EVERY possible storyline has been exhausted a long time ago. Hollywood just keeps rehashing the same old plots over and over again. Like Pop music already has, movies will also "eat itself".

I think this trend is likely to continue. It seems to be a general dumbing down thing. No real thought provoking movies or good action storylines these days. The film companies are still way too concerned over recouping large profits, so they pander to what they perceive is the lowest common denominator. At the moment this seems to include angst ridden 30 something females in big pants/angst ridden Teenagers or crud kiddie moves for term breaks. Honestly the last decent film I saw wasn`t even in English! (CTHD).

Ho Hum. `Spose I`ll have to wait for the next big awards ceremony for any good releases to scurry forth....

Another thing about new films is the focus on special effects. in the past, a movie would be made purely on the merit of the story or the strength of the initial concept. Now they just get a big name, spend 80m and you`ve got yourself a hit. The attention to detail went out the window ages ago, and now the basic plot`s are starting to look a bit under-fed too. I love great effects, but not at the expense of storyline quality. There are several exceptions of course, and some recent movies have been well produced AND have supreme effects/casting. If you disagree about the down-turn in quality, then look at the difference between the original Star Wars and The Phantom Menace. Films are over-produced and lack directorial purpose (whatever it may be). A bit like The Beatles and Westlife - it`s the same difference. As I said, there are exceptions, but they`ll get fewer and fewer as time goes on.

Well, they say that there are only 26 (?) available storys for any medium available. I am more optimistic, Being John Malkovich was one of the most original ideas I have ever seen in a cinema.

As for the rest of this year, I`m really looking forward to (late this year or early 2002):

Gangs of New York - this will be amazing!
Hopefully these should all be impressive.

I would actually really recommend Bridget Jones, I haven`t seen a comedy that funny for a while!
