Better question, why, at this very moment, are the BNP winning the poll? Do all the moronic bigots come out on a Saturday night?.. wait a second, scratch that.

The reason the BNP are winning the poll is because if you look at previous polls, invariably, people tend to tick the controvercial (yes my spelling is poor, i know) option just to be different, ive even done it myself at times but i wouldnt worry, there arent too many weirdos stupid enough to vote for the BNP and if they really are serious about the BNP, i suggest they probably arent clever enough to read this, or any other site, in the first place, so dont worry too much, its just a bit o fun by most hacks on here.

Interestingly, Haggis has raised his point in semi-jest mode, but I think his point demonstrates why so many political views/discussions/opinions can`t be raised on a national level at the risk of offending the minorities at the extreme ends of the Right and Left.

An example is if a green representative started insisting we stop using our cars, we would all(most) revolt in anger, in the same way we`d all throw our arms in disgust if we heard the BNP agenda.

It`s so much safer to debate education, Council Tax and Health, there`s very little risk of offending anyone then!

I`m not having a pop at you Haggis, maybe I`ve just read a little too deeply into your thread. Well done for RJS choosing that poll, if everyone used it honestly, we`d see some interesting things I think.

No offence meant.

Neil.

There are also more conservative votes than i imagined there would be. Although after reading a few of the `Hang em all`, Richard Littlejohn style rantings in the past it doesnt surprise be too much.

Of greater concern than the votes for the BNP is the number of people saying they would not vote for anybody. Apathy is becoming a massive problem whenever it comes to voting, and i back calls for voting to be made a legal requirement - people who don`t vote have no right to complain about anything, as they didn`t use the opportunity they were given to choose who makes those decisions. Oh, and the `they are all the same` and `they never do what they say they will` lines are no excuse for not voting. We live in a democracy (yes, i know people will write massive texts about how we don`t) and therfore voting is our biggest responsibility as citizens. If people are so angry about the war in Iraq, then simply vote Blair out at the next election, I can assure you that will get rid of him immediately - you can stand in trafalger square and shout as much as you like, but he won`t go anywhere. Be grateful that we live in a democracy, there are a lot of unfortunate people in this world who don`t.... :(

Its true. If you dont vote, then you cant complain.

I lived in Birmingham for nearly six years. The local elections happened last year on the very day i moved down to oxford, but i still made sure i voted as the, frankly, appaling Labour Administration had let me down at virtually every turn.

I voted against them quite happily, as did many other people and the Lib Dems got in. Labour were voted out for the first time since 1983 and im quite proud to think that i helped to leave Birmingham a potentially better place.

This could be an interesting poll, if all were taking it seriously. As has been said, people always like to be controversial, which is undoubtedly why the BNP is as high as it is. There is no way I would vote for Labour while Blair is in charge, but then again the competition is pretty weak at the moment from other parties.

Don`t worry Haggis, I`m sure the mods will stear people off the subject.

Anyway, a vote for the BNP is a wasted vote, they don`t appear to do anything once elected.

From Mark Thomas in the latest New Statesman:

Quote:
"Not surprisingly, the BNP is not really interested in local-authority politics. Having got 17 seats last time around, it is worth looking at how it has fared since. Out of the 17 councillors, according to the anti-fascist magazine Searchlight, Luke Smith resigned from Burnley Council after attacking a man with a bottle; Maureen Stowe left the party claiming the BNP "did not care for Burnley at all"; Robin Evans, a Blackburn councillor, left too, amid claims that drug dealers and football hooligans were in his branch; and John Savage, BNP councillor in Sandwell, was so bewildered by council debates and voting that he ended up supporting a pro-asylum-seeker motion."
