Page 1 of DVD Addiction?
General Forum
Wandering around various DVD forums, I keep coming across people asking whether they`re addicted to DVDs. It set me thinking - I`ve been collecting these things for about eighteen months now and I`m rapidly approaching my 100th disk. They`re a mixed bag of movies - my tastes are shall we say indiscriminate (ahem) - and it`s a large outlay from quite a meagre budget.
Am I addicted to DVDs? I think I may be. I never used to buy VHSs with such regularity, and I don`t think there are more movies coming out to my taste than before. I don`t watch my disks any more than I watched videos, only maybe one or two a week, and I never rent movies (in any format) on principle.
Time for a good conspiracy theory perhaps.
I go insane in the membrane for em.
18 months to get 100 discs? You should be embarresed about that (OK, that was a joke, but that isn`t addiction, although your buying aound 1/2 per week) :)
Must admit my outlay is dangerously high (for a UNI student), I`m averaging on 16 per month (I`ve only owned a DVD player for 6 months), never did this to VHS. I think Blockbusters have to blame on this :D they charge a high rental price, a short rental period, and I say to myself wouldn`t it be better to spend that money on a disc for keeps?
Also the fact that DVDs are cheaper than VHS this time last year. Remember when VHS, the new titles costed £16-£20+? I avoided like the plague (and anyhows our mam would`ve kicked sh*t out of me).
I`ll end it ere then. Anyone else got a rant? Conspiracy?
RE: I go insane in the membrane for em.
I`m a confessed addict too... cutting down to one a week or so though - far too easy to do
16 a month`s gobsmacking for a student tho!
I dunno whether its the quality or the cheap prices or the sound or the picture or the extras or the easter eggs but i have had my player for barely 2 months and have over 30 dvds
it`s like crack whores monthly :)
I want to cut down but ever since last week when I stumbled accross the classifieds at... ahem... dvdforum....(mod. delete if you want). I can`t really stop it :o . Probably calm down once the parents are back from holiday though. (thank god)
RE: it`s like crack whores monthly :)
Mark, you must get paid a cracking wage to be able to buy as many films as you do. I get a decent wage, but to have been able to have bought 100 DVD`s, you`re looking at nearly having spent around £2000. Not that there`s anything wrong with it, cos I`d love to have a huge collection.
Yangshouwen, how the hell do you afford it? You must have a huge student loan, overdraft, or a big credit card bill. I`m going to be a student this September and I know money will be tight, which is how I can`t work out where your getting your money from. Very admirable mate.
RE: it`s like crack whores monthly :)
I have about 120 discs (bought over 1 & a half years), which I would be okay with, but I don`t even like them all! - I buy region 1 titles without seeing them and I`ve been stung a few times. I got "Way of the gun" last week and thought it was quite dull. I didn`t like "American Psycho" either (it was all a daydream...ahh!). Certain reviewers have got a lot to answer for.
RE: it`s like crack whores monthly :)
"Way of the Gun" is great. Although it`s a bit slow, the end courtyard shootout more than makes up for it.
Can`t speak for "American Psycho" though. Although I`d like to see it.
d:o)
erm...think I`m approaching about 150+ discs with 2 on order....and another one tonight in store...(The Abyss)..
Addicted? possibly....
Got a DVD drive in my PC....got a DVD player (Aiwa 370 like you didn`t already know..and now got one in my laptop PC too..!!)...
Oh, and an LG 2280 awaiting the replacement chip....
Am I addicted? I`ll let ya know when I see what new discs we get in tomorrow! ::grin::
And how long? Thats about 8 months I been at it now....
AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!
RE: DVD Addiction? me? no... it`s all that avaliable porn ;)
Probably don`t spend as much as other people with 100 disc collections (half cost less then £6. They are Hong Kong discs), the rest are either 2nd hand, ex rents, or just me being jammy and haggling a new disc for a cheapish price (The Cell cost me £10 fer new :)). So I`m looking at less than a grands worth of DVDs in my collection. Me, I work for my parents take-a -way, get cash through that (so doesn`t really run into my student loan, but still I have to slow down. methinks)
