`Comfort Movies`

Stuart McLean (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 22nd January 2004, 19:09

I recently read one of Mark Oates articles where he described some of his favourite movies as `comfort movies` which he distinguished from other favourites by describing them as the kind of movies that you can play again and again, anytime - even if you`re not watching them they still provide a sense of `comfort`. I thought this was a great way of describing a particular corner of his tastes.

I guess my `comfort DVD`s` would include: Carry On`s; Doctor Movies; Ealing Comedies; Gerry Anderson `SuperMarionation` series; movies like `Whistle down the wind`; old TV shows like `The Persuaders`, The Protectors, Space 1999, TV Planet of the Apes, The Avengers etc. Maybe it`s all wrapped up in Nostalgia...

I`d be interested in knowing what other people`s favourite `comfort movies` might be.
I mean - I`m a big David Lynch fan but comfort movies they aint!

;)

Star Wars (any of the current 5), LOTR EEs, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Back To The Future, Transformers The Movie, Wes Anderson`s films (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums), John Woo films, Terminator films, Futurama (all 4 seasons), hardcore lesbian porn, Toy Story (and Pixar film), Michael Bay movies, Farrelly Brothers movies...

Basically anything that is easy to watch. The Royal Tenenbaums is actually quite an emotional film (at least it affects me) but it always makes you feel good at the end, even if it is slightly sad. I grew up in the 80`s so a lot of those films are direct products of the age ;)
I also find mindless action flicks are great to just sit down, turn on the 5.1 sound system and be thrilled for the next couple of hours. As you can see, there is nothing pretentious in my list of "comfort movies" :)

Any Friends or Ally McBeal episode...any Simpsons episode...in fact, any TV episode that is light and frothy. Films that I can just play in the b/g and enjoy are my top-rated ones - some of those can be found here, although now I cannot edit or update it. :-(
