`The Last Samurai` and `Lost in Translation`...

chewie (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th January 2004, 16:30

Just come back from this. First impressions are very good. Well told story of the old "questioning your morals" which in this case progresses to retaining or regaining your honour. The fights are well done and the cinematography excellent. The acting is good all-round, with special mention going to Ken Watanabe, who plays Katsumoto, the Minister of the village (not the religious kind, the bad ass steel wielding kind ;) ).

For the first 15 minutes I thought this was going to be boring generic stuff... and in many parts it is pretty standard fare and very predictable. But it`s entertaining enough and I`ll probably buy the DVD. And as I said, the battles are impressive and there are a few surprises in the final one 8)

Edit: Just saw Lost in Translation. Another great film. Bill Murray is a genius and Scarlett Johansen (sp?) is really good as well (and pretty hot! :D ).

It`s a pretty hypnotic film, with a really laid-back feel, and here I`m refering to not only the acting, but the cinematography, music, sound, etc...
It`s being praised by critics, and for once this is a film worthy of the attention.

I just had a really good time watching it. The characters were likeable and there were quite a few laughs. It also had a heart, one about friendship that I myself could relate to.

Anyway, I just added it to this thread to save time. Anyone else seen either of these films and care to share their opinion? :)

yep seen this a month ago, I was expecting Tom Cruise kicks Japans ass, was verysuprised by how good it was, infact Tom Cruise spens most of the film being owned by the samurai in one way or another.

I love what happens to the American officer at the end too ;)

Yes, good lesson in that as well. All gimps get what`s coming to them :p ;)

Another thing I noticed was the music was very similar to Pearl Harbor and Gladiator in places. Hans Zimmer is getting lazy these days me thinks ;)

I have to say this was one of the best film`s I`ve ever seen. Simply astounding. Just a pity it was ruined by teenagers talking all the way through.... >:( >:( >:(

Expect the worst and you won`t be disappointed!

Wow, quite a statement. If I saw it last year, it would probably have just made it into my top 10 (which is quite an achievement).

Anyone else seen it and what did you think? :)

I was listening to R5 film critic and he gave it a right slagging, reckons that Cruise is shot several times and only ends up with a limp, learns to speak japenese, martial arts ect and the way of the samurai all in a year, and that the film is total cack.

Oscar.

Saw it and thought it was ok.

Certainly not one of Cruise`s best films by far.

That would have to be Rainman. 8)

That would be Mark Kermode on Simon Mayo`s show. He is really good (when not talking about The Exorcist). I often disagree with him but I do value his opinion because he is one of the few film critics that is genuinely passionate about films and "knows his s***" when it comes to all the facts. A true film geek :)

Sorry, haven`t managed to stop laughing at the poster yet.

Cruise san looking like a cross between one of the village people and my seven year old when he`s in a sulk.
