Do you leave your PC on all day?

BallisticJack (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 30th September 2003, 07:22

Lads & Lasses,

Ever since I`ve owned a PC I have switched it on when I need to use it and off when I`ve finished what I`m doing. I`ve recently moved it downstairs and must turn it on/off around three or four times a day. Consequently I think of leaving it on all day, everyday. So my question is...what does everyone else do?

If I know I am coming back to it I leave it on. If its going to be a while I tend to put it into suspend mode which is half shutdown but is back on in senconds.

My PC is on 24/7 - the room gets a little hot sometimes!

Turning it on and off 3-4 times a day is probably doing it more harm than good. Your PC components are generally under most stress at these times. Try putting it into Standby - also a lot quieter.

Why`s that then Ben? ;-)

I have an open mind - everything goes in one ear and out the other.

Heed this mans wisdom! :)

If you are worried about heating your room up (which lets face it most modern PCs will happily do for you) then set the power options to turn off your monitor after 30mins, power down your HD after an hour, and place the whole thing in standby after 2. That should give you a good balance between unneccessary wear and tear and a cool room.

Standby: Also, when you go to turn your PC off, (from the Startbar) don`t you get the `standby` option aswell as `restart` and `turn off`?
I also have my power button set to bring this screen up when I push it.
Also, at this screen, when you push `shift` (I think - not at home PC at the moment) the standby icon becomes `hibernate`. Don`t know why it`s hidden away like that. Good little option for quicker restarts - even remembers which apps are running/open etc) but you may need to enable it and it uses some diskspace..
