Digital Camera - shall I wait?

I think I now want one of these but the only thing that puts me off is the price. I`m off to Japan in January for like, YONKS, and the cybershots (for example) are half the price of the ones in Britain!! Shall I wait and buy a super-duper Japanese model then??

yep, all electrical goods are taxed to high heaven over here. hence so many of them being made available in Duty Free stores.

Plus you`ll also have a better range over there, there`s loads of models that are a bit `specialist`, and as such, aren`t deemed mainstream enough for the european market

Go to "Electric city" in Tokyo [Akiharborer (spelling may be wrong)]. This is world famous for having the highest concentration of specialist electrical stores in the world.
You really need a week there to visit all the stores !!

I am also after a new digital camera. I have Japanese students that can buy me the camera I want at the cheapest prices, BUT, the first one I got about 2 years ago ONLY had a Japanese menu on the camera, the book could be downloaded in English from the net. The menu on the camera (a Fuji) could not be altered to anything but Japanese. This still seems to stand for Japanese cameras (available in Japan) but there may be some that are not. I asked for the price of a Pentax Optio 550. In this country it is £550-00 from the high street but £399-00 from Digital Depot in the UK. The price in Japan was about £375-00. Not so much of a saving from the Digital Depot price. There is also the problem of Guarantee, import duty (not too sure about that) to be looked into. The adapters sold with the cameras also were Japanese voltage 110 or something like that so I had to get a converter, this adds to the price. I still believe it is a cheaper option but be cautious.

i bought a minolta dimage f300 from the states for £270 i also got a free tripod(worth £10)/256mb card(worth £125 high street/£70 dasb.com)/camera case (worth £10) total value in excess of £500 so a good saving... the high street price at the time was £380 (Jessops) for the camera alone! :D
I did have to pay customs charges of about £50, but only because TNT first paid it on my behalf (bless them :( )
So i would say definately buy from abroad... Minolta warranty is worldwide through their registered agents!

marksparks99... a 29%er! ...You paid £320-00 with free case & tripod & customs. I just did a quick check at Digital Depot. The same camera with a 256 MB card would be £391-00. Also with the camera is a 64MB card. Take the 64 MB card & swap for tripod & case. I believe it is cheaper from the States, but any charging equipment would be 110 volt so again extra would have to be paid. Price to you in the US. £320-00. + any charging equipment. Price in UK from Digital Depot.£391-00. Is it really worth it?
