Page 1 of Guy done for using "Paki"
General Forum
I think it`s a disgrace that a guy is up in court for using the word "Paki." The judge said that words like "Aussie" and "Yank" were terms of endearment. I think it`s a disgrace. Doesn`t anybody have a sense of humour anymore, not that there`s anything really funny about it, it`s jsut used to reference pakistanis in a typical everyday way.
What are your views?

Depends upon which context the word was used. I mean, if it was used in a sentence such as "P*** off back to where you came from, you f***ing Paki" then I think it`s only right and proper the person should be had up in court.
Sadly, a lot of racists use it a term to describe anyone they perceive as being from the Indian sub-continent, such as Bangladesh (a bit like calling a Scottish person an English person)
I`m sure true Pakistanis do not like being referred to as Pakis, either, although may be someone can advise me.

Look its all to do with the race riots in oldham.. and i`m pleased that this precedent has been set.. it disgusts me to hear some of the chanting directed at fans and players of ethnicity.. Newcastle players subjected to disgusting behaviour in the San Siro.. and this is a step forward..
and in my opinion.. yes it is an offensive term
As an indian i f*cking hate it.
Neil
it is definetly not a term of endearment...and although it may not sound as harsh as n*****, for me it has the same connotation.
i`m glad this guy was "done", as you so eloquently put it. racism should not be tolerated on any levels. by passing it off as a trival or flippant remark, this breeds acceptance of anti-social and racist behaviour.
RE: Guy done for using "Paki"
The more people `done` for this sort of behaviour, the better. Perhaps he actually added JMHO afterwards as well, which seems to be a popular way to get around things nowadays.
RE: Guy done for using "Paki"
I may have my facts wrong. The chap was chanting "Town full of pakis" at a football match. Presumably at the prodomenently (sorry about the spelling) white crowd. This happened at Leicester a few years back when Leeds came. I would say that 80% of the away crowd were singing it. I am happy to say that about 90% of the Leicester Kop were disgusted by this and let it be known in the only way at a football match. A chant "Town full of scum"
Leeds PLC said they would look in to it and any fan found guilty would be banned. I think you can guess who many have been banned. I feel an E-mail comming on.
Neiliboy, as an Indian does that make you a "Indi". Strange how thats not offenceive. Also if you were to call each other "pakis" in the same way some black people call each other and some white people "n*****" would that make it less offencive?
All the best,
The 42%er.
I asked (in all innocence) this same question on here a year or so ago. Why is the word "Paki" deemed to be so offensive, as it is merely an abbreviation of the word "Pakistani"? The answers I got were along the lines of how the word has been used historically, which never really washed with me.
Personally, I still don`t get it.
Sure, if someone was chanting "A town full of Pakis" at a football match, I can see the racist intent there, and yes, throw the book at him. Someone deliberately targetting/abusing somebody because of their race/nationality is racist.
However, if someone says to me "What nationality does so-and-so come from", would it really be wrong for me to say "He`s a Paki", if, indeed, said person is from Pakistan? I`m British, and I don`t take offence if someone calls me a "Brit".
I honestly don`t get it. Can someone pinpoint the exact reason why this term is deemed so offensive?
I don`t use the word as asians in general feel offended.
But its a little strange to me how you can be taken to court for speaking. Name calling.
Whats the line you stop at?
A few made up examples. I am at a football match watching Aston Villa* and Dion Dublin is having a poor game:
Someone shout you
"You black bastard, youre s***!"
As far as I know, this can get you banned for life at clubs. Not because you swear, but you use the word "black".
If the player was call a "You bald bastard, youre s***!"
Nothing would happen.
Are whites so paranoid about offending black people?
Are blacks so sensitive about the colour of their skin?
What about people who are bald? Their feelings could be hurt. Is one group more important than another?
Its a free country and we have free speech. Insane Muslims can say what they want about this country and government and nothing happens.
*I dont support/like/hate Villa, they are just one of the teams who make up the numbers and don`t do anything. Dublin is a slightly above average player. All IMHO.
You`re wrong, Dion Dublin is s***e!
