Changing Energy Supplier

kebabhead (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 14th May 2003, 07:29

Hi folks

Is it easy to change suppliers as people make out.

I currently have Npower for Electric and British Gas for well Gas

Was thinking of changing to one supplier to try and save money

I pay my bills quarterly as I don`t like money being taken out on a monthly basis

Did a check on moneynet.com who suggested Amerada.co.uk as the cheapest with London Electricity a close second.

Does anyone use these are their suppliers. If so are they much cop?

Thanks

I have been with Amerada for about 2 years now, and have had no problems at all. There were a couple of hitches at transfer, but these were the fault of London Electricity (my original supplier) who decided to charge me for one number of units, and then tell Amerada that i had paid for about 100 less, so they tried to bill be twice for the same electric. That said, it was easily sorted out.

I am on the online dual fuel deal, so they take a fixed amount each month, and then each quarter i input my own meter readings, and they update my account accordingly. At the end of the year, depending on if you are in debit or credit, they alter your monthly payment accordingly.

The only problem with amerada is trying to talk to them - if you are the kind of person that likes to be able to call them, then as i remember they can be a nightmare to try and get on the phone, but they do respond quickly to emails, which is their preferred method.

I don`t like london electricity as they are the sods that try and con people on their doorsteps.

While we`re on the subject of gas.

Been in a brand new house now for over a year, but haven`t paid a gas bill. Tried phoning the gas supplier to get a bill, they have no record of the address, tried phoning Transco, no record of the address, tried transferring gas suppliers to a joint electric/gas supplier, they couldn`t find out who supplied us.

But I`m still using gas, any ideas what to do? Obviously I don`t want to end up with a huge bill in a couple of years, and if I decide to sell I`ll probably be screwed.

Try getting on to the house builder to see who piped in the gas when the houses were built

And make sure you`re accruing enough money to pay the bill when it finally comes in. They WILL charge you the arrears, and it may come as a nasty shock if you`re not prepared.

Asked the builder who supplies, these were the first people we contacted, and like I said they have no record of the address.

As I remember, British Gas are the only people to do new connections, so unless you have changed the supplier, and obviously you haven`t, then the account will be with them. If they say they have no record of the address then chase them up on it, or you will end up with some crazy bill.

Did the builders give you a final meter reading when you got tthe keys?
I moved into a Wimpey home just over a year ago and wasn`t given a final meter reading from the builders for 6 months. When the bills finally came in, I passed them on to Wimpey who paid as they couldn`t prove how much gas I had used.

In my previous house (another new property) I had a simillar problem as roar349 is having, but with Anglian Water. They didn`t have a record of my water meter, and every time I called to ask when I would be billed, they apologised for the inconvenience caused and credited me £5. In all I made ten calls before they finally found any record of my water bill. I wasn`t charged for 8 months worth of water and I was in credit for the following few months too!

switching is dead easy if you are on a transferable tarrif. If you are on say a heatwise tarrif you cant change suppliers. also the savings only tend to be worth the effort for paying by DD.
Re the gas supply. With new houses they tend to be known as plot numbers for supply purposes when instaled if you can find your meter number, this is usually on a plate on the side of the gas meter. Transco will then be able to bill you for it. With New houses when this happens arrears can be paid back over time and with no interest. I used to work for Eastern Energy now Texas utilities. I sold new supply contracts. No I wasnt one of the door to door people
