Yammie A5 or E800 ???

Shaun (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 7th January 2001, 19:05

Whats better the A5 or the E800?

I ask because i`ve finally convinced the missus we can afford to upgrade the videologic dd digitheatre and go for a seperates system. :-)

Unbeatble have the A5 for £269.00 and the E800 for £217.00 whilst richer sounds have the A5 for £263.00 and the E800 for £299.00.

There`s one review of the A5 on this site which is pretty convincing but i cant find any on the E800. anyone point me in the right direction?

Also speakers.. i am thinking i can change my centre ,front left & rights
and sub (obviously as the sub with my videologic is the amp ) straight away. and use the fronts i am using at the moment for rears. Any suggestions for new speakers and would this set up be ok.

This is not going to be a rushed purchase as i made that mistake with the videologic (even tho its served me ok i know i can get a lot better)

cheers

Shaun

Shaun - good choice in opting for separates, mate !

The difference between the E800 and the A5 is that the 800 is what we loving call a surround sound processor : i.e. it adds the extra four channels to an existing hi-fi stereo amp : both rear channels, the centre channel and a low frequency effects channel (LFE) - the subwoofer channel, if you like.

The A5 is a full blown 5.1 amp, capable of decoding DTS and Dolby Digital, as well as ProLogic and `normal` two-channel stereo too. Try http://www.sdb-electronics.com for the A5 at £249 (dunno what they charge for carriage)

As for speakers - try and book yourself into a demo room at Richer Sounds and try out their bargain range of speakers - check out the obvious brands like Mission and Tannoy first. Have a looksee at what they`ve got at http://www.richersounds.com Sound, after all, is in the ears of the beholder....

Cheers Clayts

Its the A5 then. I was in richer sounds today and the girl said they were £200.00 but none in stock. As i said though this aint a rushed purchase so i can wait to see when they get some in.

I thought probably missions or tannoys also but as i have heard neither i could do with auditioning them before i buy.

I`m up the tottenham court road tommorrow so i`ll have a look around there as well. (dont expect to see much)

Aiwa 370 Rocks!!!

Yammy A5 Rocks!!!! (i Hope)

Shaun, if they`re £200 BUY ONE !

However, a word of warning about Richer - they sometimes sell them as `Graded` (i.e. `ex-display`, returned but mended models) - however they do lob in a year`s Supercare as well, I think.

But if they`re £200 new - Jeez, that has to be the bargain of the century. They originally went on sale at £349 !

My understanding is that they`re both made out of "Unobtainium"!

I`d been waiting on an E800 since beginning of November ("no more in the country Sir until end of January at the soonest"...same for the A5 I believe) and eventually gave up and bought the A5`s sister...the RXV596RDS Receiver.
£270 out of Richer Sounds.
Didn`t really need the front channels (the E800 would`ve been ideal) nor a "radio" but I was fed up waiting....and the remote is (slightly) better.

But....an A5 for £200....that I might`ve waited for...

I bought an E800 from Richer online for 217 (they will price match the unbeatable.co.uk offer). This was delivered mid December. I`ve got an Arcam Alpha amp so didn`t want to downgrade to an A5. Your`re ultimately bettter of with a dedicated AMP+processor rather than AV AMP if you can afford it as the AMP will be better for normal listening.

Man alive!
Jim - when did you order that if you don`t mind me asking?
I`ve been waiting on an E800 from unbeatable.co.uk since the end of November.
I`m also surprised to see A5s around as, again, everyone I spoke to said "Out of stock until January due to huge buy-up after the rave press reviews"
