These Messages I keep getting sent to my IP address

Jim Morrison (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 25th March 2003, 22:35

I keep getting these stupid messages sent directly to my Ip address? Does anyone else ge tthem? I have installed a firewall which has stopped them, but I have to disable it twhen playing multiplayer games becuase it won`t allow me to connect otherwise, then they keep coming up and interupting the game.

Is the legal, bombading people wiht unwanted s***e?

You have 3 choices (others will have more solutions)

1...You can bin them without looking at them. (Never Open unknown attachements as this may give you a computer virus).

2...Your internet provider may have the facilities to intercept and dump a specific hard seller or offender or domain name before it reaches you.
if you inform the provider of your problem, they intercept and bin, AOL has this online facility.

3....Change your provider every so oftain, hence your IP address, and E-mail name. Though it can upset your internet software and your friends trying to contact you.

I think Colin is misunderstanding what these messages are.

I`m guessing these are netbios based popups which are very annoying (although I`ve never had one being behind a firewall permanently).

Go to Start menu, Run, type "cmd.exe" and in the command line window try:

net send localhost Arrrrggggh!

No way to stop this unless you disable netbios or block the netbios ports with a firewall. Disabling netbios also disables file sharing.

Oh and it is very hard to trace, they send them to loads of IPs at the same time, and whether it is legal or not is debatable. Welcome to the latest annoying type of spam.

Surely, with Windows, it`s far more secure to use NetBEUI for file sharing on a local network, and leave NetBIOS completely disabled. Having the NetBIOS ports open not only makes you a target for this sort of spam, it also leaves you vulnerable to attacks by hackers, etc.

However, from Win `98 onwards, MS seems to have deliberately discouraged the use of NetBEUI, even to the point of leaving it uninstalled by default in XP (although it`s pretty easy to install it again).

Am I missing something here, or is it just Microsoft being crap as usual?

Mike

Well this is a new one on me, you just cant keep up.

What exactly are the content of the messages, are they trying to sell or is it just rubbish?

I note windows 98 and XP mentioned, does this new stuff also affect windows 95, as I just use a cheap old computer for internet?

Hi Jim,
All the points raised by other users are good ones, but you could try to configure your firewall to accept packets on the ports used by the games you are playing. The info you would need should be avilable from the game web sites. This would mean that you stay secure behind your firewall and be able to play your games as well.

Hope this helps. :)

Are these small pop ups which look like a windows, window(!) which has small text, offering everything from insurance to bored housewives texting??

I have been getting a lot of these lately, and one even invaded my screen while playing Generals online!!

Isn`t it the messender service that allows these. Can`t you just stop the service (depending on O/S)?
