JUST too far away for ADSL - anyone got any top tips?

RichardH (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 26th January 2003, 11:43

The BT number checker tells me I`m too far away from the exchange. Live with it, I thought, until I found out how much too far I am away.... just 30 metres! We are 5.53 km away from the exchange, and as any fule kno, the limit is 5.5 km.

I am sure it is possible that we COULD run ADSL, but this means I need to find someone in BT willing to go beyond the "sorry, too far" response.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Sadly not, Richard.

In fact the ADSL we love and know is actually RADSL (see http://www.adslguide.org.uk/qanda.asp?faq=radsl} which yours has just exceeded.

Do you not have Telewest/ntl in your area ? ntl do not require you to sign up to their TV/phone service anymore just to get broadband.

Failing that, is there an exchange nearer to you ? You may be able to pre-register an interest at BT, or at a number of other ADSL providers (see the campaign site at http://www.broadbandnorfolk.co.uk/index.php for Norfolk which has had some outstanding successes). The BT page is at http://62.172.198.79/broadband1/getting_broadband/bb_avail_and_reg.asp?t=4

Otherwise, you`re looking at possible waiting for the BT "mid-band" service (likely to be a 128K service), or going the very expensive route down towards satellite broadband.

Is the distance from the exchange you quote the line length - or as i suspect the physical difference? If the latter then the chances are you are on the end of the loop which explains the problem with the line length.

You may be able to pay for an engineer to test the line exactly, though I do not know if BT a) would do it b) how much it would cost.

Regards

I share your pain Richard H! I too am exactly the same distance as you.
I tried to sign up about a year ago and was told this. So a year down the line I thought, "Great, they must have enabled a closer exchange or gotten better radsl technology in this time surely..."
In short bt have done absolutely nothing in this area in a year, so I would`nt get any hopes up mate. It`s just a shame that this country is monopolised by such a shoddy cowboy outfit as bt. And it aint gonna improve, there so called roll-out statistics are total bulls***.

Thanks for the sympathy all - no, the line length is the actual line length (using the 17070 check thing from http://www.adslguide.org.uk) so doubly frustrating. If cable was possible, Clayts, I`d jump at it, but we live in a small village 3 miles from the nearest town (which does have cable, actually - maybe I ought to lobby them!!). I`ve read about that midband thing, and had resigned myself to that until I found out how close I am to the limit - I guess there`s got to be a limit somewhere....

Satellite isn`t really a great solution, as I need 2 way with a decent response time (not for gaming - I use pcAnywhere to maintain servers remotely, and I understand that satellite isn`t very good for that sort of thing).
I think maybe I ought to cough for an engineer to come out and line check - there are rumours that if you slip them a few quid your line miraculously improves - but I`m sure that`s just mischief making. ;o)

technology eh?

We can put a man on the moon, we can have satalite link up anywhere in the world, we can create life in a test tube, yet there are people in England who can`t benifit Broadband because they`re out of way by 5km!!!

Welcome to England

Why is it that the average Broadband Internet price per month asked by the provider is the same figure in Britain in Pounds as America is in dollars.

Does the word RIPOFF come to mind?

Cheers, Colin Mac
