Car Tyres - 195/60 R15 88H - What does it all mean?

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Monday, 16th December 2002, 13:18

I need to buy a new tyres for my car and have no idea what I should be getting! Is there a big difference between the cheapest and the most expensive? I`m not bothered about getting any performance tyres, more interested in a nice ride (aren`t we all!:-).

My front two tyres only lasted for 11k miles, the guy at the garage last year said that was because they were soft molds (sp).

So, where`s the best place to pick up a set of tyres? I only need to change the drivers rear but would it be worth changing both rear tyres? The tread on them is sound, I`m only changing it due to a puncture. The car is a `99 Astra SXi.

Thanks in advance,
Ross.

Try here:-

Cheapest is not necessarily best value, neither is most expensive !!

Continental tyres usually have a long life, but it depends on how often you squeal away from the lights !

as far as i know this is what everything stands for:

195 is the width of the tyre in mm
60 is the wall depth (from the rim to the road)
R15 is the internal radius i.e. how big your wheel is (in inches)
88 not sure about this one
H is the speed rating, it`s the maximum safe speed of the tyre, the speed rating should normally exceed the maximum speed of your car but in reality as the lowest rating is 109mph it shouldn`t really matter.

No, 60 is the ratio of the `height` of the tyre to the width. So, the tyre `height` is 60% of it`s width. Height is the distance from the wheel to where the tyre touches the ground. (outer diameter-inner diameter)/2. How else can I put it..

If it is only a puncture some places repair, I had a slow puncture which ended up being a faulty valve, they replaced it and it only cost a £5, I also had a nail embedded in another tyre which they repaired !! Try Formula 1 or maybe Kwikfit (the latter are pretty poor though !!)

The best advice is to shop around - you`ll find as much as 50% difference in the same tyre at different places. I find independants are often cheaper than the big chains, but that`s not always true.

Just because you`ve not heard of a make doesn`t mean it`s no good! However, beware of anything too cheap. I usually spend around the £40 mark, which gets me a decent tyre.
