Fireworks

As the local neds take their inane pleasures by letting off more and more powerful munitions disguised as fireworks and the hospitals and fireservice get ready for the carnage that is november the 5th I pondered this question.
If someone came up with an annual stanley knife blade chewing day for children, they would be locked up as insane, yet every year hundreds of horrific injuries are caused by easy accessiblity to fireworks.
I know it`s an old chestnut but surely it`s time for fireworks to be restricted to public displays or at the very least sale of the explosive banger type stopped.

Or how about just huge hefty fines for the newsagents and other such sellers of fireworks to children?

I live next to a forest, lake, and park. All three of which seem to see more fireworks let off inside than the street backgardens surrounding them. Not a nice time of year to walk your dog. :/

Even during the day kids where letting them off, at half term. :(

As my dad always reminds me, Britain is the only country on the planet that legally sells explosives to teenagers.

Most countries around the world freely flog fireworks to kids all year round for various fiestas and festivals. As usual it`s only the British who are incapable of using them safely.

Good luck to the Nottingham MP who is passing a paper through the HoC to get fireworks banned full stop.

Last night, here in my "lovely estate" between 1 am and 2.45 am we were treated to a crazy barrage of bangers, rockets and goodness knows what else, all let off by idiot teenagers deciding to run riot. Some interesting places - subways, the woods, wheelie bins, outside cupboards - surprised none went through letterboxes and inside car exhausts too for "a laugh".

Ban `em full stop - what`s so fascinating about letting off something that is clearly lethal in the hands of a misguided few ?

I`m with you Clayts. Ban the sale of all fireworks. They should only be supplied to officially licenced public organisers of public displays.

Unfortunately, although the law now states that fireworks cannot be sold to those persons under 18 there are certain gunpowder related items (indoor fireworks, caps etc) that can be purchased by persons over 16).
But in my experience many shops are prepared to flout the laws anyway.

Ban the lot !!

I live in Cumbernauld just north of Glasgow, it`s a new town and one of the design features is separation of pedestrians from road traffic.
This means lots of tunnels and underpasses which make wonderful sound chambers.
It`s 1.45 am and they are still going off every five minutes. I live in a normally quiet residential area and for the last 2 weeks its been like living in Beruit.
The only way to stop it in at goverment level.
God help me, I`d even cheer our mickey mouse Scottish parliament if it acted.

I have this odd mental picture of you hammering down the motorway at 165 mph, totally rat-arsed with two fingers stuck in the cigar lighter and a lit sparkler in each ear..:-)
