ONE FOR THE P.C TECHIES HELP REQ
have just installed win 98 on mates p.c so he could surf the net (p2 300mmx) all went fine except that cant get his monitor to display more then 640 x 480 in 16 colour. monitor is installed ok and graphics card is installed using standard pci driver from win 98 any ideas anyone as it looks awfull when surfing the net pics display really bad (hi fab !!) he`s a big dvd buyer so i had to get him online instead of buying from hmv etc thanks in advance for any advice

You probably need to install the correct video drivers and/or change the monitor driver to the correct monitor (or at least the standard windows SVGA). This should get him upto at least 800x600 - anything above that will depend on the graphics card.
Following on from Kevin`s tip , Right click the mouse in the desktop.
Select Properties
Select Settings
Select Advanced
select Monitor
Select Change
Select Specify Location of drivers (Advanced)
Select Display a list of drivers in a specific location
Select Show all hardware
Then Select Super VGA 800 x 600 or Super VGA @ 800 x 600 @ 75 Hz
This might do the trick. You might have to go to the card`s manufacturers site for newer drivers.
What card is it anyway and I`ll have a trawl myself. :)

hi folks thanks for the help not to sure as to the make of the card but its old (4 yrs ish) will have to find out if not can anyone recommend a cheap pci graphics card and where to get one from (amazing is`nt it i only offered to fit a hardware modem to a win 95 system and end up wiping fitting more ram and now this ho-hum ;-) CHEERS AGAIN GUYS matt

go to pcworld they do no name brand components, you can get a 16mb 2d card for 10-20 quid or a 64meg 3d for under 50 quid.

When your PC boots up just before the BIOS screen your display type is normally displayed top left of screen
