Anyone for a Steam Deck?

This is kind of interesting...
https://www.steamdeck.com/en/

Starts from £349, 2-8 hours of gameplay. I guess it's like a Nintendo Switch but for PC gaming.

No interest in handheld gaming whatsoever. I always thought the only reason people bought the Switch was because that's the only way to play Nintendo games these days. But I guess there is a market for handhelds after all.

The specs seem pretty similar to other devices like the crowdfunded AYANEO. I've seen some people suggesting that this could be capable of running a Switch emulator, which might be interesting.

I wonder how well the weaker memory in the 64GB model will handle complex PC games.

I think it's kind of interesting that for so many years there was a huge market for handhelds as long as they were by Nintendo (I guess because the audience is just not interested in the AAA style of games that Sony were desperately trying to get people onto PSP/Vita with), and has that really been filled by something as large as the Switch?

Has increasingly large mobile phones opened the door for people to accept something so large for mobile gaming?

I am definitely Steam Deck curious. I am not going to play Doom or Rage 2 on it, and being limited to Steam games makes me a bit of a sad panda, but I do have a lot of indie games on Steam I might play....

...for 30 minutes each before I got distracted.

It comes with SteamOS but you can install whatever you like on it, including Windows. It really is more of a handheld PC, rather than a console.

Assuming you'll be able to get one:

Hmm interesting! I wonder what the Windows performance would be like, it's traditionally not been great for battery life.

...I suppose, given the Switch has been the best selling console for a long time (not that many people realise that), the answer must be a yes?
I have a Switch and have played it handheld less than half a dozen times I'd say, so to only think about the handheld side of things may be to miss some of the point maybe?

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

The more I think about this, the more I think this is basically a Switch for PC users. Who knows if there is a market for that.

I hope this is as good as the hype! I am torn between getting one ASAP and waiting to see if they just release a more powerful one later.
