Tekken 4 - PS2 impressions

I have just picked up my Japanese copy of Tekken 4 and here are my impressions.....

I have been going off my PS2 lately and spending more time playing my GameCube and X-Box as most of the games that have been released up to date dont look anything special.....

Just about all PS2 games suffer from Jaggies especially the recent Virtua Fighter 4 released by Sega which is a higly detailed game but let down by the rough edges on every polygon in the game.

But i am very surprised and glad to see that Tekken 4 has no jaggies at all,
the characters and backgrounds are perfectly smooth and with no slowdown at all....it looks like Namco seems to be getting round the anti-aliasing problem at last.

The gameplay has changed a bit as well, now you are playing in a confined area which can make a big difference when pinned against a wall.

You can also grab your opponent now and push or pull them into different positions, which really makes a difference to the gameplay.

The backgrounds are highly detailed and have plenty of animation to them, from fighting and surrounded by drunken yobs to splashing about in small pools surrounded by a lush jungle.

The main characters are also very detailed and special attention has been put into the clothes.....on the ladies their hair blows about and their dresses ripple with the wind.

As with all Tekken games there is plenty of depth to this game.....every character has over 100 moves and lots of combinations to learn yourself.

There is a very helpful practice and training mode to help get to grips with those difficult combo,s.

There is also a seperate 3D side scrolling mode which i have,nt tried yet but no doubt will need to be completed to open up some secrets as all the Tekken games have a wealth of secrets.

One last thing i must say is the ending FMVs of the characters all look incredible, athough make no sense at all, but these are stored in a theatre mode to watch anytime, and if you wish to play the game in story mode you are treated to some fantastic animie story boards telling you the story from the previous games up until now.

Not all people like beat em ups but you need at least one in you collection....and this is the one.

Although this game cant match up to the graphical achievment made by Tecmo with DOA3 for the X-Box....the game is still very beautiful looking and completely blows away the competition with it excellent depth and gameplay.

They are starting to use a new technique which makes the 4 mb`s of Vram redundant, as the system memory is used, It`s very technical that is why only a few games like MGS2 and Tekken4 are currently using it.

VIRTUA FIGHTER 4 may have some JAGS but it is far superior then DOA3

Sounds good but let`s wait for the PAL version to see whether they`ll cock it up like they did with TTT and Tekken 3 on the PS1.

No its not, try DOA3 on the xbox and you`ll see. Whats so sad for the Playstation 2 is thats a 3rd generation game campared to a 1st on the xbox.

yes it is jerky!

on most serious games forums most people including myself say VF4 has far more depth then DOA3, DOA3 is just eye Candy on DOA2 and thats a fact.

and Virtua Fighter`s gfx is not 3rd generation compared to DOA3`s otherwise DOA3 gameplay and depth is 5th generation compared to VF4`s 1 gen play mkay.

hope that helps

Problem with this type of forum is you never feel like you are getting a completely unbiased view

Irondukes right about VF4 , as far as 3d fighters go in gaming circles this is definately the purists choice, theres no denying that Tekken 4 looks nice and it does play a decent game, its definately got depth and is more accesible than VF4. DOA3 looks sweet n all but is often criticised for being a rehash of DOA2 with few more touches, and its felt that it dosent require much skill to play, the one button, easy counter being brought up etc.

VF games are deep, they really require a knowledge of not only the char u are using but also who u are fighting, more so than other 3d fighters...theres almost too much to it...evades, sidesteps, counter hits, counters all requiring more skill to use than Tekkens and Doas counterparts...the char Akira is possibly hardest char to use effectively in any fighting game, but is also probably the most effective fighter of any game if u get my meaning.

VF gets overlooked cos of its complexity really, not because of its quality...if ure into fighting games try and make the effort to learn the little touches, its pick up and play to some extent but when u begin to learn the techniques u might see why its regarded above all other 3d fighters.

hope i didnt bore u, take care ppl and have fun
