Available soon as a free operating system designed for the TV and the living room.
[/quote]Steam is coming to a new operating systemQuote:
As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the
environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen.
It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

Valve announces free operating system SteamOSLinux-based OS "designed for TV and living room"Quote:
Valve has announced SteamOS, a free, Linux-based operating system designed for televisions and the living room.
an interesting concept, and I guess it makes sense not to put all their eggs in 1 basket by not being the exclusive manufacturer of their own console, but have an OS, that me, Viewtiful Mark and a few other ppl may download ;)
If they are getting more power by running closer to the metal will be interesting to see Gamespot etcs head to heads like they do PS3 Vs 360 Vs PC etc
no-one mention MSX ;)
RE: Steam console revealed at CES
There is a rumour, and it's only that at the moment, within the Onlive forums that Steam may well have partnered with OnLive...

Finally, a multiple choice answerQuote:
Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.
RE: Steam console revealed at CES
The controller is weird! What will the next generation of controllers look like - no buttons at all, just a smooth shape that is totally touch sensitive???
Both my sons use Steam, so I'm just waiting for them to ask about getting one of these, but nothing so far.
I gauge the possible success of a console on their enthusiasm for it generally...so I'm just waiting until one of them starts a conversation about it. I'm keeping shtum!
RE: Steam console revealed at CES
Heh, the Smurfette Science project, seems like a good idea!
Not sure about the controller though, I really absolutely hate any touch joystick interfaces on my iPad and iPhone for games, in fact I even hate analogue sticks for digital controls.
So even though this has ridges to help you feel the centre, I'm still not convinced it would be as good as a stick gamepad.

Valve, the online software distribution company, is shipping 300 prototype Steam Machines to beta testers on Friday. The lucky few hundred will receive both Steam's hardware and SteamOS, its Linux-based software for video games, for testing, as the company pushes to establish an open-source gaming platform.
RE: Steam console revealed at CES
Could this be something that one of our more intelligent people out there build a Raspberry Pi to work with and make me finally take mine out the package?
Yeah, I know, probably hasn't got the hardware to even boot the OS let alone runa game but it'd be nice... ;)
And that's just reminded me that I have one of the first type RaspberryPi's still in it's envelope and never used or powered up yet.... LOL

"There`s that word again... is there a problem with the Earth`s gravitational pull in the future?"
Raspberry Pi has an ARM processor, so it's not likely. No idea how much work it would be to port but there are a few Linuxes which haven't been ported due to difficulties. Some of those that have work very well.
I guess it depends, if SteamOS is their own finely tuned version of say debian, then it would be very doable by some-one, although you'd only be able to play the simple arcade style games I think.
they may be doing it hardcore to be as close to the metal as possible for most performance out of x86, and x86-64, not to mention graphics drivers

it's out, sadly no time to play, and based on debian, but with propriatry ati and nvidia drivers which makes sense.
