Dreamcast - It wasn`t that bad, was it ?

RichTea (Competent) posted this on Friday, 17th January 2003, 07:44

Went round to a mates last night and played a few laps of Project Gotham Racing on the Xbox.

Made me a bit nostalgic, so when I got home, got out the old Dreamcast and fired up Met Street Racer.

This game is still enjoyable, and I don`t think there is much difference between the graphics on the DC and the Xbox. Made me think about how good the DC was when it came out, and why it never took off. All down to marketing I suppose.

Anyway is there anywhere that still sells DC games (other than Ebay), because foolishly I flogged off most of my DC titles to get a PS2 !! Yearning for a bit of Soul Caliber now !!

Cheers,
Rich.

Think your right, poor marketing was the reason for DC demise.

Aye. The Mega Drive was superbly marketed, but Sega pretty much lost the plot after that.

I used to have the Megadrive, bought the Mega-CD add-on (advertised by Spud Gun, no less) which dealt mainly in full-motion games (dragon`s lair, anyone?) But it did have Silpheed, which used Q-Sound(TM) no less, and the fantastic-for-it`s-time Thunderhawk, with sprite scaling and texture-mapping aplenty. Then there were the games that were basically nothing that couldn`t have been done on the `Drive alone, but with some flashy pixellated FMV cutscenes thrown in.

The it was onto the Saturn, which applied foot to buttock, if memory serves me right. Then a grey box everyone called `PSX` came out and the saturn was stuffed, shame really, particularly when it had games like `Nights into Dreams` (someone`s acid trip, right there)

Then, while the playstation was making light work of the `Foggy` N64, the Dreamcast. for many of us, it was our first foray onto the internet. (even though you couldn`t open Java pages and activeX was a far off dream. You couldn`t play movies, or sounds, but it had Macromedia Flash, even though a 5 second cartoon took a fortnight to load)

I stiil have mine, The internet option is useless now as Sega have taken down the server. (I think I had about 200 e-mails on there, hey ho, it was probably all spam anyway)

But apart from MSR and soul Caliber (which I still have) The game that wiped my social life out was Shenmue. Something about it was just too creepy. I have Shenmue 2, but I couldn`t get into it as you don`t have money handed to you every morning, you have to *gulp* EARN it!! And what was with all the Toy-Collecting? That`s sad enough in real life, without a realtime computer game getting us to do it as well.

Now I`m on a PS2, what with Sega finally giving up the machine developement side and concentrating on games. At least Am2 and Yu Suzuki won`t be out of jobs

It was a great machine, problem was not enough folk bought it to see so.
I`m currently playing Jet Set Radio, bought it about 2 years ago cheap and never got round to playing it. Very nice indeed.

Gamestation also has a very good selection of DC games available, cheaper than CEX I find. If you can find Skies of Arcadia or Grandia II snap them up. I`ll take one off you hands.
