The Golden Compass anticipation thread

I loved the Pullman books, and although the anti established religion slant has apparently been altered, the trailer looks great. Shame they had to bring LOtR into it, though...

Some good casting - Nicole Kidman looks spot on as Mrs Coulter, and Daniel Craig ought to be good as Lord Asriel.

Liked the trailer-loved the books mostly but the last one was overlong. Nicole Kidman should hopefully get her teeth into beinf the scary bitch Mrs Coulter and Daniel Craig...despite what mr Pullman thinks there must be a God.

Thought the trailer look dull. I`m sure the film will still be better than Narnia though, and I`ve read some good on-set reports during the making of the film that`s kept my interest in the release of the film.

The Golden Compass is hardly an exciting title for a (kids) film, so it better be marketed well! ;)

From what I`ve seen the CGI looks a bit naff! I also thought the CGI in the LOTR trilogy was awful also. CGI can be good....just look at how well they`ve done Transformers. Now THAT is the benchmark....

Just remember though, CGI animals, fur, skin, human faces (basically anything naturalistic) = fooking difficult - robots, spaceships, shiny things = piece of p1ss (relatively).

I do think fantasy films tend to look the same because they use the same people / techniques to do the CGI. It`s not just the rendering, it`s the whole feel of the thing. Can only get better though.

I`ve tried to avoid reading anything about the film to avoid spoilers, as I haven`t read the books (have been meaning to just haven`t got round to it).

Looking forward to the film from the trailer, liked Narnia film (loved those books as a kid), but this may seem like a daft question...

Is it the 1st book renamed as the Golden Compass, or is it the title given to all 3 books put into 1 film?

cheers

Al

It is just the first book renamed.
They were said to be waiting to see how it does before comitting to filming the other two, but I believe they have now decided to go ahead already.

Caught it last night. Was quite interested not having read the books.

I`m slightly confused, all told. Is this primarily aimed at folks who HAVE read the books?

The expo at the start - all that stuff about dust`, what do they mean? I sat the whole film trying to understand what they were on about only to come up blank at the end. Oh great, got to wait for the next film (possibly). Can someone explain it to me? I`m curious what the little `uns make of it, whether they will be as puzzled.

It didn`t really grip me, I have to say. The daemons were OK but the bears seemed more animation-CGI than realistic-CGI. The girl playing Lyra was fine apart from those annoying as hell `Cocker-nee` slips that she came out with.

Sam Elliot and Derek Jacobi (ooh, so evil) were good. Daniel Craig was alright.

Nicole Kidman, hmm. Eva Green, ooh. I would.

I think the problem it is that there`s a general feeling of `haven`t I seen this before somewhere?`. After LOTR, Harry Potter, now Narnia and the rest there`s just a bit of children`s fantasy / magic overload.

It`s like the late 90s after `Lock, Stock...` and all those godawful gangster geezer films...

I love deadlines - I love the whooshing noise they make as they fly past...
