ROCKY 6 - OPINIONS (CONTAINS SPOILERS)

Harry_Potter (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 21st January 2007, 11:41

Hi all,

Absolutely nothing happens during the first hour. We wait and we wait as the Italian stallion sits daily by the grave of his wife, speaks to customers at his restaurant and ponders why his son doesn`t really like him looking him up at his workplace.

Then comes a computer simulation between ROCKY and the current world champion on ESPN. The clear winner being ROCKY!! The current champion unpopular, looks to fight ROCKY in an exhibition fight for popularity expecting it to be an easy run.

ROCKY feels like an old half-remembered hero nobody, and looks for local fights and obtains a licence to fight again. ROCKY is approached by the champions managers and decides to go with it, as his last fight!!

Now, at 60 nearly twice the age of Dixon, he is matched with him again in a 10-round exhibition match before which Dixon says he will let him go the full distance if he behaves himself. But that`s not old Rocky`s style.

ENDING REMOVED .......... :/ (SORRY)

I would give the film 3.5/5 - definately worth a watch!! But not as good as the other ROCKY films, but definately a nice end for the series!!

What do you all think?

Chris

How is reciting the entire plot contributing to your opinion?

Sorry, just seems a bit bizarre. I thought it was great. A little heavy-handed at times, but then it is in keeping with the tone of the originals (first two anyway).

I want to see Stallone back on top, and hope Rocky Balboa takes a heap of money worldwide (it has already mustered a respectable $65m or so in the states, looking to end with over $70m). But Rocky is huge worldwide!

This is the fifth film we`ve all been waiting for, and now we can forget that previous debacle.

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

You should of seen it before he edited out the (wrong) ending.

The thing I was most puzzled by was the `nothing happens for the first hour` comment. I think a helluva lot is covered in the first hour.

I thought it was a crackin film, easily as good as the origional film which I love. `Nothing happens in the first hour`??? it might be a lil slow but a lot happens, You could argue that nothing happens for the first hour of the origional film. Sfter the horrid Rocky 5 this is a fitting end to the Rocky story.

Well, having just returned from the cinema, `underwhelmed` doesn`t even cover my opinion. For the first hour, Stallone seems to think he`s making an in-depth character piece and fails at every turn. After that he must have realised that he was making a `Rocky` movie and when the music blasted out and the training montage began, I awoke from my semi-stupor and actually began to enjoy myself! The build-up to the fight was well done and benefited from the involvement of HBO, who allowed Stallone to film during the Mayorga-De la Hoya event: the commentary by Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Max Kellerman, together with Michael Buffer as MC and Joe Cortez as referee led to an authenticity that is rarely felt in `Rocky` films. Despite this, the fight was horribly edited and the `Sin City` style colour bleaching and flashbacks to earlier films just ruined the most realistic Rocky fight of the franchise.

It was rubbish, but at least the training montage and fight was enjoyable - when his son asked Rocky to `Unload on him!` I wondered what Stallone was thinking!
