Can you bypass the `menu locked` on a DVD

SteveF63 (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 8th October 2004, 22:47

When you start a dvd the `no entry` logo appears if you press the menu button initially. Is it possible to bypass this and to start menu straight away?
Does it depend onyour DVD player, I have a panasonic one

I think it`s probably the way the disk is coded - in my experience some let you skip trailers and copyright notices etc, some you have to sit through the lot. I could be wrong though, in which case someone will post here and say so. :)

Yes, it`s down to how the DVD is coded. There are things called, "Prohibited User Operations", coded in the menus that will allow or disallow the pressing of menu or other buttons during certain sequences such as the copyright screen, trailers etc..

Those discs that don`t have P-UOPS allow you to press menu or other buttons to skip the parts you don`t want to bother watching.

I`m pretty sure this is what it`s called. Some players, because of the way they`re made, may also allow you to skip these P-UOPS.

HTH. :-)

P-UOP`s, the most annoying of which, for me, are the ones that don`t allow you to change soundtracks or subtitles mid-film! Grr.
So annoying not being able to flick the subs on to `hear` something that`s not too clear or to not be able to switch a commentary on. >:(
DVD Shrink etc. removes these though :-)

I hate those too, especially when changing subtitles/soundtracks on the fly.

They make reviewing all the more difficult/frustrating. They tend to be on R2 rather than R1. The R2 Star Wars trilogy has them, but R1 doesn`t.

The most annoying is when you get a disc from somewhere like France or Italy where an English language track is contractually obliged to have forced foreign subtitles. The French ITC releases and Class of 1984 have this,as does some Italian stuff.
I got so annoyed with this, especially when I discovered that Sony machine mods no longer come with UOP disabled as a bonus,I tracked down a company in Switzerland that sold modified machines.I got a Toshiba 220,then £80 from Richer Sounds, but it cost me £200.Worth every penny until the UK releases started.

Sometimes switching the player off and on will skip you straight to the menu, sometimes it won`t.

It is an aggravating feature of DVDs all right. Isn`t this the kind of thing we were supposed to be getting rid of when we all ditched VHS?

Its never been a problem on the proper DVD player(some Schneider model I can`t remember which exactly) but on my PC - it is a right pain. Oh for a windows version of Xine.

The only way around this is to get a chipped or hacked player that has a PUOP disabler, I have a chipped 3 year old sony from the long gone techtronics that does it. The only other way is to rip the disc to a DVD R via DVD shrink and get rid of them that way! :-)
