VAN HELSING...

chewie (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 6th May 2004, 14:10

Just got back from this and... I enjoyed it. I hadn`t read one good review (apart from Harry Knowles, but even then it was debatable whether he actually thought it was any good). Also, the trailers weren`t very good. So my expectations were low.

The critics are right though, Van Helsing is not a good film. But it`s a good rollercoaster. I can`t remember any character moments, and this is quite literally a film constructed of action set pieces (that get really silly, with all kinds of swinging around castles and s*** :p ). The actor`s never get a chance to sit still, it`s just full steam ahead from the beginning. And I dig that... after all, this is the first Summer Blockbuster.

It`s a silly film, but I liked it.

And Kate Beckinsale is really hot :D

I reckon it`ll be this year`s LXG - you`ll either love it or hate it. Haven`t seen it yet, of course, I`m waiting for the DVD :D

And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms

I don`t know about that. I didn`t love LXG, but I didn`t hate it. I liked it. Same as I liked Van Helsing.

The appaling artwork ive seen for the monsters and last months pics in empire made it look kinda lame. There was a picture of drac biting someones neck and it looked s***e. It looked like the grinch gone wrong.

Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent.
Forty percent of all people know that.

Going to see this on Saturday. Not expecting much but I hope its better than LXG as I hated that.
And is it just me or have they modeled the Frankenstein Monster on Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein? :o :/

Stephen Sommers` movies seem, amongst other things, to try and recapture the fun, excitement and sheer adventure of the Indiana Jones movies. He has Subsequently failed to do so with any of them and Van Helsing looks to be no different, which is a shame as it puts a seemingly good cast to waste.

Sommer is a very enthusiastic popcorn style Director. He just wants his audience to have fun in an old fashioned way B-movie way, which should surely be applauded.

I would also like to add that the Visual Effects were top notch. There are a few dodgy shots, but for the most part it`s very good stuff :)

Saw this last night, and thiught it was...fun.
OK if you want some intellectual discussion or deep meanings, you ain`t going to get it, but on the other hand if you want a "take your brain out and enjoy it" movie its good.

Oh, and I can`t believe he pulled the full "if a man says his prayers" piece from "The Wolf Man" !!
