"classics"

TinnionA (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 6th May 2004, 10:31

I say that with inverted commas because I was interested in films that are considered classics but that you personally dislike.

And first up... Citizen Kane. I saw this about a year ago(maybe two) and I could not see what all the fuss was about. I`m sure there are plenty of films people have told you are classics but you can`t understand why it is.

Maybe for the time it was a good film but that is past. It is an OK film that is overly long and dull.

So, any other nominations then?

Not really considered a classic but I think The English Patient is highly over praised.

The Shining. It`s about as scary as the Teletubbies! And the kid is terrible.

Come to think of it the Teletubbies are a lot more scary! :D :D

By the way......I like Citizen Kane :o :p

I totally agree with the first post about Citizen Kane! I was having this same conversation with a mate of mine a couple of weeks ago and he was telling me how good Citizen Kane was for it`s day. But that`s my point "FOR IT`S DAY". By todays standards numerous films use the same camera techniques and styles and we`ve seen it all before - but better!
I think *some* people rave about certain acclaimed films because they think it makes them look intelligent.
My god, you`d think `Cool As Ice` had never been made.

I need all the help I can get. ;) :D

I think Citizen Kane is one of those films you either like or you hate. My brother can`t stand it. Most people rate if for its technical innovations but I`ve always liked the acting and I think the story is cleverly told.

Have you seen `Nosferatu` or `Metropolis`? I haven`t seen either but they are regarded as `classics`.
I won`t go out of my way for them.
Back to the Future on the other hand...

Agree that Back to the Future is a classic. One of those films you can watch again and again. :D

Just out of interest do you like any old films? ;)

Old films...? I think it depends what era you grew up in and what your parents were into while you were growing up. I`ve always liked Close Encounters of the Third Kind because my dad liked it.
Most of my favourite films are from the 80s and 90`s. I don`t know how many films from these eras can be classed as classic though...
Maybe Police Academy..?

Good point. I got my love of John Wayne westerns from my dad. But I think your tastes change as you get older as you`r influensed by other things. I`ve a keen interest in Asian cinema but I never watched any growing up and my parents hated subtitled films.

As many as any other. A classic is a classic no mater when it was made.

Setting myself up to get shot down here but.... Star Wars.
I have never understood how or why it is rated so highly.
