Hi
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but here it is.
I have a Sony dvd player (region 2) which I cannot make multi region, but I was wondering because region 4 are pal (I think) will they play in this machine or will it just say wrong region???

Sorry if its a stupid question.

i think this will depend if the disk is dual encoded - some region 4 disks are encoded with region 2 (you will see 2,4 in the Region icon on the back of the packaging)

However if the disk is only encoded for region 4 then this will not play on your region 2 player no matter if it is PAL

have i made sense here ??????????????

Thanks

Geoff

Pal or ntsc are fairly irrelevant these days, its the region that counts.
Some R4 dvds are dual encoded as both R2 and R4 but anything other than R2 or R0 won`t play on your DVD player.

Not a stupid question at all...I had a similar experience with a Reg 4 disk..

A workmate of mine has a region 4 version of `Ginger snaps` he got cheap on Ebay that plays fine on his multiregion PC drive, but when he tries to play it on his DVD player in the front room he gets the message `wrong region`. I borrowed the disk from him and it played fine in my Bush player without any modification (even though I have a code to make it region free, I hadnt used it at this point) It might be `pot luck` that some players play em ok and some dont...not sure. I do know that some reg 4 disks are dual coded reg 2/4 but I dont know if this is true for all reg 4 disks or just a selection... Im sure someone who knows more about Reg 4 disks can fill you in with the info

If you dont know something ask...its the only way to find something out...no such thing as a stupid question ;)

Don`t rely on this though - as a rule, they tell you what`s printed on the box, not what codes are on the actual disc. (Most say R4 even if they`re R2/R4.)

MichaelDVD`s info is usually accurate.

If you`re still not sure, have a look at what languages the subtitles are in. If you get things like French, Czech, Hungarian etc. then it`s almost certainly R2/R4.

Royd63Uk, are you sure your player cant be made multi region? It wont be with a remote hack, but there may be a chip or a firmware flash available. I have an NS400D which I made multi region in about 5 seconds with a special rented handset. I have used it to play R1, R2, R3 and R4 so far.
