How good are Criterion Collection DVDs?

kozza (Competent) posted this on Friday, 21st February 2003, 14:20

Which are the best ones to buy in your experience?
And are they region 0 or region 1 DVDs?
Thanks
Kozza.

All the Criterion discs I have are excellent.
The Jacques Tati discs have been deleted, but for a class film try `The Third Man`.

They are all Region 0 with NTSC video, which might make a difference, depending on your DVD player or TV.

I think they are overpriced for what you get, I mean you do get a few excellent dvds such as Brazil, but for what you get on the majority of them I find that they are a huge rip off, considering there are other dvd labels that offer exactly the same service if not better on classic/cult titles such as Anchor Bay.

I have `Chasing Amy` Criterion and fair play it`s a good disc,but no better than any of the other Kevin Smith DVD`s. I wouldn`t pay more than normal price just to get Criterion.

If you`re looking for excellent picture and sound then you may feel that they are not worth it (they can be v. expensive). But for extras they cannot be faulted. I have a couple of these discs inc Life of Brian. The other versions pale into insignificance!

For a good price try;

The Life of Brian and Brazil discs are definately worth it (although i would have liked Brazil to be anamorphic) but look out for R2 discs such as Armageddon (2-disc) which is Criterion in all but name (i believe) and also a lot are just direct transfers from the laserdiscs, like Chasing Amy (apart from the bit where Kevin Smith apologiese for saying `f*** dvd`) and others have been superceeded by better editions eg. Silence of the Lambs and Spinal Tap.

I`m a big fan of Criterion, they go to town on discs no one else seems to want to touch. The `Brazil` disc, whilst expensive, is undeniably excellent, they also make a good show of Kurosawa and Sirk, although they have been getting slack over the last year or so.

Robocop with is now unavailable is meant to be cack compared to Region 2 and 4 Directors cuts(non anamorphic and bog standard stereo). So just because it`s Criterion doesn`t mean it`s the best.
