If you just want to show off - and why not, try a couple of sampler discs

Dolby Labs "We've got the whole world listening" has all the Dolby Digital openings plus a couple of other bits and bobs. Somebody posted a review of it in the review section.

The other you might try is "The Ultimate DVD - Gold" This has set-ups as well as various Dolby and DTS comparisons - it also shows the difference between widescreen and pan'n'scan. It's a R0 American disc - Play had copies last time I looked.

When I think about there are a few more, `Time Bandits` is the same but even has a new inteview on the R2 edition. and `Sparticus` - but I don`t remember the extras.

`A Night to Remember` feature from Carlton is the same as the extras are on the `other` side of the disc.
Also `Seven Samurai` and `Yojimbo` from BFI are the same - however the Criterion edition of `Solaris` has different extras - but the film is the same as on the Artifical Eye release.

An interesting point - but there is only one 'Spirited Away'. The DVD has both the English language track as well as the Japanese. Strangely enough Walt Disney were one of the production companies that financed the film and as such John Lassiter of Pixar is down as Executive Producer.

Mind you Disney may pull the DVD release - the original US cinema release was in a massive 26 screens, so the film did not take a lot of money, however, overnight news says:

"CartoonResearch.com reports that the Mouse House will be putting this film into re-release starting this Friday, April 28, 2003, on over 800 screens!! that`s about 6 times what they had the film on during the end of September, and is about 1/4 of the amount of screens they normally put their films on (like `Treasure Planet` and `Piglet`s Big Movie`)."

You never know but you can hope 'Spirited Way' may just turn up at a multiplex near you. Albeit with the English track.

Oscar for Best animated feature film of the year

For those who had not noticed: the list was
"Ice Age" (20th Century Fox)

"Lilo & Stitch" (Buena Vista)

"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (DreamWorks)

And the Winner Is "Spirited Away" (Buena Vista)

"Treasure Planet" (Buena Vista)

Spirited Away is by Hayao Miyazaki the director of Princess Mononoke. Our friends at Play have it for sale R1 on 15 April

One of his eary films Castle in the Sky(1986) is also released the same day.

Needless to say I shall be posting one of my long winded reviews when they come out.

Tis call `The Quiet Earth` a 1985 film from New Zealand. Starring and co-written by Bruno Lawrence, Directed by Geoff Murphy

As far as I know Not available on DVD and I think even the tape has been deleted.

RE: How good are Criterion Collection DVDs?

All the Criterion discs I have are excellent.
The Jacques Tati discs have been deleted, but for a class film try `The Third Man`.

They are all Region 0 with NTSC video, which might make a difference, depending on your DVD player or TV.

RE: Superbit is it worth it?

The short answer is - yes. Plug here for my reviews of the superbit `Godzilla` and `Crouching Tiger`
Superbit will not make a bad film any better, but if you have good kit, and a good sound system the picture and sound are wonderful.

As for the price! - Play have the best i`ve seen.

Me I`m waiting for the R2 release of `Dark Crystal` and `Labyrinth`

Dear All

I`ve been posting reviews - off and on - since April 2000, and since I often read people writing about other reviews, in magazines and on the net, I was wondering. Do any of you read the reviews here?

I`ve only ever had 2 bits of feedback, and as there is no other way of finding out i`m just curious - Its something to do on a wet and cold monday night.

RE: Muppet Christmas Carol R2 - missing song or not?

The song is on the R1 disc. One of extras covers the reason for its delition and you see Michael Caine and the young lady recording it. As for the 4:3 ratio - you need to try `muppetcentral` and see how much they hate disney for putting both `Treasure Island` and `Chrismas Carol` out in pan`n`scan.
