I don`t know if this is a silly suggestion but does your dvd set-up have dts sound? I ask this because The Others has that screen at the beginning giving you the choice of dts or dolby but dts is the default setting...you will have to highlight `dolby` and then press `select` or `enter`.

Like I said, maybe this isn`t the cause of your problem - but that is what happened when my brother borrowed my copy and played it on his machine.

Thanks for the advice, even when I press dolby OR dts it stills plays without sound but I found when Im faced with the Dolby/dts selection I just press Menu and it then plays the film with sound strange but at least I can watch the film now

what audio options do you get when you press the audio button while the movie is playing ? And which produce sound ?
Oh and I find that with some chinese DVDs if you go into language and audio selection and then back to main menu before playing the film it seems to forget the settings you`ve just made (Shaolin soccer for instance I think) but i just use the remote buttons so I don`t know if it works properly if you select resume movie direct from the language menus.
