Backing up a DVD collection?

Bubblegum (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 2nd October 2002, 13:13

I`ve read a couple of posts now about people backing up their collection, and I was considering getting a writer to do the same myself, but my question is this, how do you make copies of DVD-9s when the only media I have found is 4.7GB?
Does this mean that only DVD-5s can be copied?

"copied".. Surely a slip of the finger and you meant `back-up`!
afaik you can`t get 9`s. You`d have to put them on 2 discs or go to something like svcd.

What I tend to do is strip out whatever extras I don`t want, sometimes everything except the movie, if the movie is less than 120 min it will fit on one disc if its longer and/or there`s extras I want to keep I down grade the quality a bit so I still keep film in a DVD format.

Yeah I was going to say something earlier - where does all this come into the forum rules. Why would you want to back up a DVD other than to give / sell to someone.

I would think this kind of discussion would not be allowed. I`ve seen other threads closed for less.

Oh well my rant over!

Well, l have no desire to back-up a DVD, but a good reason to do this would be if you own a disc which is out of print, or one which cost you a lot of money.

Shiver me timbers, were not all pirates!

I agree with the General : there`s a fine line between blatant piracy and backing-up rare discs you own (which is, despite popular opinion to the contrary, actually not legal, technically).

Besides which, you only have to go to sites like VCD Help or Doom 9 anyway, to find this sorta stuff out.

The only time we delete threads of this nature is when it relates to someone blatantly advertising pirated material. Thankfully, this is rare, as we`re all good guys who visit this Forum (well, most of the time...).

OK I stand corrected. No offence lads.

The reason I backup dvd`s is because my kids (4yrs & 5 yrs) get in a right strop if you don`t let them select and load there own discs. I am one of those people who can`t stand things (especially the dvd collection) being in anything less than mint condition. So I backup the kids films and let them run riot with the backup, you wouldn`t believe some of the places I`ve found these.

Is this breaking the law?
