Boots: Minolta Dimage Z10 (3MP, 8x optical zoom) £90 - further discounts also available

Reestit Mutton (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 24th May 2005, 15:37

This bargain has been around on the Boots site since the end of last week but they had it marked up as "stock coming soon" - well, stock is now here and the price is still the same - a price-busting £89.99. This may not have the highest resolution around but it`s got a hell of a lot of optical zoom to make up for that.

However, you can get this camera even cheaper with a discount code: choose from either 10% off (MPDJ98 ) or 1000 free advantage card points (CCAA89).

82 left in stock as at the time of this post

Incidentally, you`ve just missed the bargain of the year with the Nikon Coolpix 5200 @ £99.99 - this sold out within about 30 minutes of going back in stock. However, on the plus side, it`s showing as "stock coming soon" once again so they probably expect to get more soon - keep your eyes peeled. If you want one of these, I would suggest making the product page the homepage in your browser in the meantime.

Don`t forget that Boots will also give you 4% of the purchase price back in Advantage card points, which you can use against a future instore purchase.

Thanks, RM - Boots certainly seem to have the best deals at the moment.

Note to everyone interested in cameras - pixel count is about as relevant as the maximum figure on your car`s speedometer. A good 3Mp camera (like the Minolta or almost any Canon) will blow a mediocre 5Mp into the weeds...

Photographer Ken Rockwell says:

"Forget the silly debate over pixel counts among digital cameras. There is little visible difference between cameras with seemingly different ratings. For instance, a 3MP camera pretty much looks the same as a 5MP camera.

Resolution has little to do with image quality. Color and tone are far more important technically. Even Consumer Reports in their November 2002 issue noted some lower resolution digital cameras made better images than some higher resolution ones."

I have some 10x8 prints on my wall from a 2Mpix camera that look fine from normal viewing distance; I doubt you`d notice the difference between a 3Mpix and a 5Mpix print at 6x4 that most people use.

The Nikon 5200 sounds like a fine camera but don`t overlook the Canon A75

Agreed also. Any of the Canon A-range is worth having. The new A510 (3Mp 4x zoom) is an excellent camera, and unlike the Nikon, isn`t auto-only. It also uses AA batteries, which saves having to take the charger everywhere with you!

I second the opinion on the Canon A510 - my dad`s just got one and it`s a cracking thing. Plenty of manual options and the colour reproduction is superb.

Is it me or has Boots removed both these cameras? I was really interested in getting a Z10. Did anyone managed to get one?
