stupid question but...Whats a Subwoofer?

I`ve always heard people sepeak about them, but i`ve always just smiled and nodded as if i knew what they were on about :/

Would getting a theatre system change my viewing drastically? Whats the advantages and disadvantages of getting one?

Cheers guys

A subwoffer is, in laymans terms, a big dirty box that is specifically designed to pump out low frequencies (ie bass)

Advantages

Everyone likes bass

Disadvantages

Cheap ass speakers will sound very tinny without one. Basically, if your speakers are smaller than a video case you need one.

not like im the worlds formost expert or anything........

but if you meant `whats the advantage of getting a 5.1 set-up`,

simple question. Imagine the sound last time you went to the cinema. Now compare it to the last time you watched a DVD with just the sound coming out your telly.

Get a 5.1 system - you will wonder how you managed without it!

My Sainsburys have a Lodos system for £79.99 that is just a rebadged version of a Hitachi one on sale last yeat for £180!
It`s a great set up - I have one.
