Heads-up! NEC 2510 dual-layer burner out next month £69.99 from SVP with discs under £2 each

And first shipments of dual-layer media due around the same time. I`m told they are extremely difficult to get (I stand corrected, Matt - cheers).

Although this isn`t out til next month SVP have always been reliable in my experience and I`d say it`s worth watching even to pre-order this item - hence I think this is appropriate to the Bargains Forum.

Also SVP have a 99p delivery offer on orders of more than £30 this weekend if you register with their `buyers club` mailing list. I recommend it.

Just found out today that dual layed discs will cost about £6 each and considering it will take about 40mins to write a full disc the dual layed writer will be a complete waste of money

The price of media will drop as its more commonly used & in all fairness thats a extremely good price (running about the same for cheap single layer burners) for being a early adopter.

6(SIC)6,

Who has quoted you this price of £6 a disc, then? I have searched around and it doesn`t look as though anywhere in the UK has a definite price yet. That sounds like a figure plucked out of the air. I suspect that you have been misinformed but feel free to name the source of your information, as I`d be interested in keeping up with it myself.

I think a more realistic estimate would be around £50 for 25 discs - £2 each, if not immediately then within three months. Manufacturers will, as Rassilon63 said, lower disc prices as more and more people buy the dual layer machines and seeing as the NEC one mentioned above costs around the same as the entry-level single-layer writers most home users have, I`d say it will not be long before the cost of a blank dual-layer disc is comparable with, say, two DVD+/-RWs.

I am basing this on the fact that two single-layer discs have around the same storage capacity as a DVD9.

Basically, if the manufacturers did not lower media prices after a while, they would be shooting themselves in the foot, as very few people would be able to buy the dual layer discs at £6 each. Remember how expensive DVD players were in the early days? About three years ago you had to spend around £150 but now you can get an entry-level machine for £30. Similarly, the cost of blank single-layer media has plummeted even in the last year.

`considering it will take about 40mins to write a full disc the dual layed writer will be a complete waste of money`

Paying around the same amount for a drive with enhanced features is a waste of money? I don`t think so, even for people who rarely use the dual-layer recording capability.

I think 40 minutes for almost 9gb of data transfer to disc is pretty good - not lightning fast, but a great start. Within six months that will probably drop to more like 20 minutes, which is around the same transfer rate as most standard single-layer writers at the moment. I`m not one bit surprised that the first batch of dual-layer burners will only write at 2.4x. The manufacturers are racing against each other to be first on the market and their initial shared concern will have been to get a reliable product out there to make their presence felt. The faster drives will soon follow.

As well as the benefit of having larger capacity discs for backing up your PC, it doesn`t take much to realise that dual-layer discs will be very handy for people wanting to make one-to-one backups of movies without compression. If you`re not one of those people, then fair enough, but remember that the longer writing time will, on most PCs, be more than offset by the reduced compression time when ripping the original DVD.

Basically, this drive is a bargain whatever way you look at it. :)

I work for a computer company and that is a price quoted from Verbatim to one of our purchasers, the actual cost price to suppliers will be £5.30.

No offence but I do not believe that to be correct.I do not work for a computer company.
I have no inside knowledge,so it`s all my opinion of course, but there`s no way the cost price can be that high.

That is good news if your info about Verbatims costing £6 each as look at Verbatim DVDRs, they cost about 3-4 times more than other DVDRs. Verbatims are the most expensive discs you`ll get out there
