Reminder - The Sun / play.com vouchers expire today...

...well, mine does - I presume everybody else`s do too. Time to use it up if you have not done so already. Many thanks to the original poster for the tip and URL in the first place!

RE: PLAY.COM Special Promotion:- All the Friends box sets £16.99 each!!!!

And you can get the Region 1 boxsets (with plenty of extras) of series 1-4 for less than that from dvdsoon.com or dvdpacific.com. You can also get some of the later series boxsets from dvdpacific.com at just under the GBP 18 customs limit (but be careful - some are very close to the GBP 18 limit).

RE: Friends Series 1-10 DVD Boxsets Only £16.99 each inc Delivery !

Further Friends bargains:

Friends Series 9 Boxset (Region 4, 3 discs, pre-order, GBP 12.95 delivered):
http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/shop/product_info.php?ref=6&products_id=9903

Friends Series 1-4 Boxsets (Region 1, the best versions from what I hear, GBP 16.46 each delivered):

http://www.dvdsoon.com/show-title-details.xml?uid=47231&partner_id=1005

P.S. Also available for a few cents more at DVD Pacific (who I prefer - better, quicker service) and DVD Import. These places all have series 5-8 at just over the GBP 18 customs limit (although you might get away with it with DVD Pacific as the price excluding postage and packing is just under GBP 18 for each of these and I assume that this is the price they will stamp on the package).

RE: Friends Series 1-10 DVD Boxsets Only £16.99 each inc Delivery !

Also available at Choices Direct for GBP 168.75 which is marginally cheaper than play.com if you have no vouchers and have never bought any Friends boxsets ever!

RE: Friends Series 1-10 DVD Boxsets Only £16.99 each inc Delivery !

All of the pre-order box sets seem to be only 3 discs each.

I have the series 1 box set which I bought in France and it was on 4 double-sided DVDs with 3 episodes per side. I wonder what the quality will be like on 3 DVDs, especially if they end up being single-sided rather than double-sided to get the costs down.

I might wait until you guys get your DVDs before I order. Please let us know what the quality is like. Thanks to dicanio`s previous post, I have a region 1 boxset of series 2 winging its way to me from Canada for GBP 14.

By the way, if you are having difficulty finding the new pre-order box sets, start here:

http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=478193

Hats off to the original poster though - it`s a good bargain!

RE: Yes Minister Boxset (All 3 Series)

Have also just seen that play.com have Yes Prime Minister Volume 1 for release 4th October 2004 for GBP 9.99.

Oh, and before somebody posts the inevitable "but you could have watched it all for free on TV," I have to admit that I completely missed most of the recent repeat showings of Yes Minister, only caught the last few episodes.

Yes Minister Boxset (All 3 Series)

Pre-order, to be released 15th November 2004. Ten hours playing time. The box itself does not look too shabby either.

GBP 22.49 from Choices Direct
http://www.choicesdirect.com/templates/product.asp?ProductGuid=668420

GBP 22.99 from play.com (or GBP 20.69 with a 10% off voucher)

RE: Battle of the Planets 12 disc boxset

Thanks a lot for all the info, bargainhunt!

By the way, what does OVA stand for?

RE: Cheap phone calls

I have used call18866 and have been very happy with the service too.

A tip which some of our mobile phone users might find handy for calling overseas using call18866 (http://www.call18866.co.uk/index2.php):
"Some of our mobile customers cannot dial our 0808 170 170 8 number for free or use their inclusive free minutes to 0808 numbers.

We now also have a new 020 number available which can be used with your inclusive free minutes! Ring 020 7001 9797 for those who cannot ring our 0808 number for free!"

Re: 0845 / 0870

0845 numbers cost 4p per minute and 0870 numbers cost 9p per minute with call18866. Depending on your provider, it will usually be cheaper just to dial these numbers directly.

I would recommend using http://www.saynoto0870.com/ to find a local / national number instead.

Quantum Leap Season 1 GBP 17.99 delivered

Being released on region 2 DVD on 8th November 2004, cheapest retailer so far is play.com, GBP 17.99 delivered (or cheaper with a voucher) and no worries about customs charges!

http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=186065

I really liked the show but I still think this is way over-priced just for 9 episodes and I am going to wait until the price drops, although I will be willing to pay this for the season 2 release (coming out on region 1 next month) which should have 22 episodes.

RE: Battle of the Planets 12 disc boxset

By the way, I would also thoroughly recommend the 1993 re-make. You can get all three episodes of the OAV re-make, both subbed and dubbed Japanese / English in one package, on DVD for GBP 12.22 delivered from dvdpacific.com.

RE: Battle of the Planets 12 disc boxset

They also made another edited version of Gatchaman called "G Force" in the 1980s. It was better than Battle of the Planets in that there is less stuff edited out and there is no 7-Zark-7. (Hey, I liked 7-Zark-7 but after a while he can get a bit annoying, especially when you have watched Gatchaman / G Force / Eagle Riders without him.)

You can buy volume 1 of G Force which has the first 3 episodes for GBP 2.99 delivered from sendit.com (formerly known as blackstar.co.uk):

RE: Robocop DVDs

Robocop Trilogy now C$24.98 (=£10.39) delivered from dvdsoon.com

I am feeling quite tempted now, especially since I saw it in the shops in London for around £35-40.

RE: Friends Boxsets!!!!!!!!

Hi folks,

Rocky, if you ever want to compare the difference between different regions, then check out this site:

http://www.dvdcompare.net/about.php

(It confirms everything that diCanio has written above.)

RE: Friends Boxsets!!!!!!!!

Thanks for that, I was just looking for the series 2 box set!

The prices for all except series 2 are now much higher but I am nabbing series 2 at that price.

For the other series, the cheapest I can find is www.dvdcrave.com for GBP 15.67 for series 1 and www.ezydvd.com.au for series 1-9 for GBP 16.27 each (inc delivery).

Hope that helps if you are looking for a series 8 or 9 bargain.

Hi Saqib,

Actually, I feel the same way and have done the same thing in the past myself. The money adds up after a while.

Yamada DVR8000 DVD Recorder

Hi folks,

I am thinking of buying the region 2 version from Richer Sounds for £120. Does the multiregion hack from the thread below work?

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=176&Thread=299573&Type=1

Also, I have read a comment on a moneysavingexpert.com message board about cheap DVD recorders that Richer Sounds had had a few of these returned as they were not working. Have any of you had good luck or bad luck with this machine so far?

My alternative is a Mico Espejo 311 which has been reduced to £170 in my local Sainsbury`s (which is £30-£50 more expensive than Yamada`s products).

Robocop DVDs

1) Robocop: Prime Directives

I bought these DVDs (4 movies on 2 double-sided DVDs) for £2.97 from Music Zone on Oxford Street, London. This product also had a 4 for £10 sticker on it but I am afraid that none of the other stickered items took my interest. They do not star the same actors from the original Robocop movies but they are still quite enjoyable (provided you do not mind people having their limbs sheared off by lasers in the last movie).

2) Robocop Trilogy (the original movies)

CAN$29.98 (=£12.41) delivered from dvdsoon.ca

RE: dvd recorder £199.99

I have also found this DVD recorder for £189.99 at amazon.co.uk.

Ellion DVR-900 Multi-region DVD Recorder

It is no good for me as I need a SCART in socket - my digital TV box will only send digital output via the SCART lead - but maybe one of you will find it of use.

RE: dvd recorder £199.99

Okay, I have just read some of the posts in the hardware reviews part of this site, so I feel a bit more clued up about DVD recorders, but if anybody spots a £170 Mico in their Sainsbury`s, please let me know. (I live in London.)

I am looking to buy a cheap DVD recorder asap. I have read lots of bad reviews for Philips recorders. Any other brands I should be weary of?

Andrew

Also, £10 off when you buy 2 Disney DVDs (excpet for Finding Nemo).

RE: Quantum Leap 1st series

How much do HM Customs charge for importing DVDs costing over £18? I have been trying to find the answer from that website above but I cannot find a clear-cut answer.

Thanks,
