Quantum Leap 1st series

Brian Elliott (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd March 2004, 21:27

Hey guys,

With the 1st series of Quantum Leap (R1 only so far...) retailing at $60, I`ve put my pre-order in over at DVD Pacific , where its currently available for $37.50. All in all it makes this around £22 depending on your postage options.

I haven`t bought anything from anyone other than these guys for about six months, if that`s any recommendation. :)

Only trouble with pre-ordering at DVD Pacific (AFAIK) is that you don`t get charged until the goods ship - therefore when Quantum Leap is released the pound/dollar exchange might not be as consumer-friendly as it is now. I wouldn`t bank on the set costing £22 - but you never know !

Also arent u going to have to pay import tax on anything over 18 pounds at customs?

That`s a good point, however since the set only available in R1 at the moment, all the prices will be effected by this. Amazon.com, for example, have it currently priced at over £25, and that`s with the slowest shipping method.

Everytime I`ve ordered from DVD Pacific (I use International Priority Mail) the box has always been marked as containing items up to $20, no matter what`s been inside.

You guys have been reading my mind (about buying Quantum Leap Series 1 and the customs limit)! My idea is to keep checking the dvdsoon.com website. If and when the price comes down to below the equivalent of £18, then I will place an order. Dvdsoon takes payment when you place your order, thus you will guarantee the price and since the series is not released until June, that leaves us plenty of time to wait and see if the price / currency exchange rate changes in our favour.

The only other thing I will mention is that I am in two minds about buying this at the current price given that you only get 9 episodes for £21-22. That seems pretty expensive to me. I might wait a year or two until the price comes down a bit.

Anyway, I will keep an eye on dvdsoon`s website and will post a message here if the price drops to below £18. If anybody else notices before I do, then please feel free to post a message here yourself.

Be aware that the value of the package is displayed in the currency of the vendor. HM Customs will not go to the trouble of looking up the exchange rate effective on the date you placed your order - which they won`t know anyway.

For the latest HM Customs exchange rates go here. Canadian Dollar is 2.50 to a pound, and US dollar is 1.90 to a pound, so its a good time to buy :)

How much do HM Customs charge for importing DVDs costing over £18? I have been trying to find the answer from that website above but I cannot find a clear-cut answer.

Thanks,
Andrew

If its any help I ordered a DVD that was £19.99 and paid £7.50 all in all for the charges (this included VAT, customs and RM handling fee).
