37" Plasma, 36"CRT or 32" LCD under £2000 television required!!!

I am going to buy a new television shortly and I am undecided which one to choose. I watch a lot of DVD movies, so I want a tele that gives the best quality picture with this source. The following qualities are required:

1. A Brand with a good reliability record.
2. Must have Component Input.
3. HDMI & PC input is not essential but will be an advantage.
4. A matching stand is required as I will not be hanging the tele on the wall.
5. The package must be stylish to Justify the price & impress family/friends.
6. Must have freeview built in.
7. Must be under £2000..

I would like to hear from those who have recently purchased plasma, LCD & CRT teles. I may discount CRTs because of flickering on progressive scan plus the sheer bulk/weight.

What are the pros & cons of each type? :/

This website is selling GX210 for £194.99. That`s £40 less than the ES10. It`s very poor marketing by Panasonic UK. I think the DMR-ES10 is an excellent machine but at this price and with fierce competion from Sony as well as the cheaper brands, these machines will be gathering dust on store shelves or in Panasonic Warehouses. It`s sad that the well laid plans of Panasonic HQ will be messed up by the UK management. At least in Europe (rsp £200) & USA (rsp £131) the price is right.

Sony`s replacement for the GX300, the RDR-GX210 which has a DV terminal ( the ES10 doesn`t) is priced at least £10 less than the ES10. In Europe the GX210 rsp is €349, that`s 50 euros or £35 more than the Panny. For the average consumer, Sony has more brand awareness than Panasonic, plus a DV terminal counts for more than Picture quality. That`s why Panny`s have always been cheaper than Sony DVD recorders in the past.
Panasonic UK has made a huge mistake by overpricing their new 2005 models. Panasonic`s UK management/marketing team does not seem to understand just how competitive and price sensitive the DVD player and recorder market is. Matsus***a (Panasonic HQ) stated it`s objective of increasing it`s share of the DVD recorder market in 2005. With these clowns running it`s UK division and at these prices, its UK market share will decrease. Many big high street retailers (Dixons, Comet etc.) have got huge stocks of E55`s because they initially priced them at the Panasonic UK RSP which is £299. They`ve now had to reduce prices to £199 or less. They won`t be stocking ES10 for a while and not at an RSP of £240/250. A high street price of £199 or less is the minimum requirement for mass market DVD recorder sales.

Because, Panasonic UK are still in the dark ages. They`ve still got the Press Release for the E55 from last year which displays when you click on news centre. I`II be surprised if the website is updated before April. I phoned their customer care team yesterday (18/03/05), they said they had no info on ES10. All the info I`ve obtained from dealers or other websites.

The DMR-EH50 will have a 80GB Hard drive as the rest of Europe. All of Europe (except UK & some not so advanced countries) will get the EPG with the EH50. I hope Panasonic (UK) sets a competitive price especially for the ES10. The RSP in Europe is €299 euros as against $249 in the USA. This would suggest a £199 rsp in UK. But some websites are publishing prices from £230 to £250. At these prices these machines will be staying on the High Street shelves for a long time. The European rsp for the E55 is €449 euros v £299 in UK. A similar UK reduction in the new models price would suggest £199. My source says Panasonic (UK) are not giving the rsp yet. I have got confirmation from a Panasonic (UK) source that EPG will not be available in UK with DMR-EH50 the 80GB hard drive DVD recorder which should be available by the end of March The DMR-ES10 will also be released in the next 2 weeks whilst the DMR-ES30V will be released in April.

A freeview version of the ES10, DMR-ES20D is scheduled for a July release, whilst a 160GB harddrive model, DMR-EH60D also with freeview will be available in September.
Recommended Selling Price for these models will be released shortly, but as Panasonic has stated it`s intention of increasing market share in the home recorder market, it`s vital that ES10 is priced at £199 (RSP). Most High Street shops such as Dixons, Comet, Argos etc. use the RSP as their in store price, most consumers will not pay £200 or above for any DVD recorder. DVD-RW (VR mode) is incompatible with most DVD players & many -RW discs won`t record in VR mode so you have to choose your discs carefully. DVD-RW is a poor substitute for DVD-RAM discs. IF you want the best, then your only choice is DVD-RAM.

Panasonic should be applauded for giving the consumer the Choice of using DVD-RAM discs or DVD-RW in their new 2005 recorders. The new Pioneer recorders don`t do this.
Even with the old Pannys you can timeslip by specifying the exact time you want to fast forward or rewind. The Pioneer`s don`t do this. Plus the new Pannys are the only machines that playback all DVD formats, you get 4 hours of full DVD quality recordings on a single disc, twice that of competing recorders.
When Phelings gets a new Panny, he`ll be able to playback his Pioneer recorded -RW discs (VR) on the new machine. :D

Phelings, you don`t seem to want to know the advantages of DVD-RAM so I`ll help you out:-

1. 100000 rewrites. I have had Panny recorders for 3 years & I still use the same DVD-RAM discs I got in 2002 for daily recordings. Also you don`t have to buy that many discs because they could last for ages unlike -RW discs.

2. 30 year shelf life.

3. You can record different media files (pictures, video & music) on the same disc

4. Unmatched overwrite protection

5. 9.4GB on a single disc (double sided)

If you ask most people who have recorders that write to both -RAM & RW you would find that most use RAM.

-RW recordings on VR mode is a nightmare for most consumers because not all -RW discs will record in this mode & once recorded it`s incompatible with many DVD players that play -RW.

Also current Pannys can record in full DVD quality for 3 hours (FR) unlike the pioneers.

And as for the new Pioneer models DVR-233-S,DVR-533H & DVR-633H, these have been left behind in the picture quality stakes by the new Panasonics DMR-ES10, DMR-ES30V & DMR-EH50.

The new Pannys playback all DVD formats, the new Pioneers don`t playback DVD-RAM, DVD+R & DVD+RW. :D

New 2005 Recorders supporting the DVD-RAM format are from Toshiba, Samsung, LG, Hitachi, JVC, Panasonic.
-RW (VR mode) is a poor substitute for DVD-RAM & from most consumer reports does not playback in most DVD players. Also many GX300 owners have reported how hard it is to timeslip on that machine & even some Sony brand DVD-RW discs will not time slip. More manufacturers are adding DVD-RAM compatibility to their home recorders & as the Price of the Discs comes than it`s popularity will increase. If you want unmatched on-disc editing, time-slip & multi data on the same disc, the only way to go is DVD-RAM. The easiest way to time slip is by recording on a DVD-RAM disc.

Sony RDR-GX300 to be replaced by RDR-GX210

Just over 6 months after the GX300 was launched Sony will discontinue this model & replace it with the GX210.
The new features are:

1. Slightly slimmer design (77mm height)
2. i-link/DV terminal
3. zoom function
4. reduced RRP of €350 (£249.99), most online retailers will give at least 10% discount.
5. For sale date is April/May (It may be launched in Germany in March).

Many who purchased the GX 300 must be very angry with Sony as it was only released in September/October 2004. Sony has set a record for the quickest ever update of a DVD recorder - 7 months.

If you can wait till late March/early April then get Panasonic DMR-ES10. Although it will be priced at £199, when supply is plentiful in early April, many online retailers will give around 20% discount, so you should be able to purchase it for around £159 to £169.
Although it`s cheaper than the E55 & E50, colour gradation is 400% better & in LP mode the picture is twice as sharp (over 500 lines horizontal resolution)
Also the superdrive system gives a super fast response time of 1 second to record & playback.

The machine could be made cheaper because there are fewer parts used with a more integrated LSI. Also some buttons such as time slip, channel selection & fast forward/rewind are missing from the unit & have to be accessed via the remote control. It`s no great loss, since I`ve got the E50 & E55 and I always use the remote to access those functions.
Plus it`s the only mainstream recorder that has playback for all current DVD formats as well as recording on DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW.

At £199 or less it`s excellent value. I`ll be getting it to add to my E50 & E55.

I would recommend Panasonic DMR-E55. It records on DVD-R as well as DVD-RAM & is recommended as a best buy by most video Magazines including "Which online" and you can buy it for £199 or less in most high street shops & on-line retailers including Dixons & Comet. Panasonic DVD recorders have got an excellent reliability record.


If you can wait till late March, then I would recommend the new Panasonic DMR-ES10.

The ES-10 is the first Mainstream recorder than can playback in all current DVD formats as well as record in DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R.

It is the only recorder that can record at DVD quality for 4 hours (LP mode), it has lightening-quick response time of 1second for recording & playback as well as the usual DVD-RAM features of unmatched on disc editing , simultaneous recording & playback, Time Slip, Quck View at 1.3 times playback speed.

At a predicted price of £199 it will be flying off the shelves when it`s launched in late March. I`ll be adding the ES10 to my E50 & E55.

I have read many user reviews of the GX 300. Most reviews state that users were unable to timeslip even with Sony`s own brand -RW discs. As for not recording on +RW, that`s no great loss as it can record on -RW. The Panasonic DMR- ES10 is the only DVD recorder that can playback all current DVD formats as well as record on RAM, -RW, -R, +R.
I would advice anyone wishing to buy a new DVD recorder to wait till March when the new Panasonic ES10 & EH50 are launched. You get 4 hours of DVD quality from a standard Disc as against 2 hours from the Sony. You also get 1 second start for recording & playback.
I can guarantee you that it will win all the top awards from video mags.

Plus the price will be £199 (€299) for the ES10 and £399 (€549) for the EH10

I stumbled across some new info about the European Launch of the new Panasonic DVD recorders. The DMR-EH50 has a HD of 80GB against 100GB for the US version. It will have Gemstar Guide plus TV guide which is a 1st for a Panny in Europe. The price is 549 euros, the DMR-ES10 is priced at 299 euros. I expect UK rsp`s to be £399 & £199 respectively. The ES10 will be available in March & the EH50 in April.
I would guess that the European recorders are assembled at Panasonic`s German DVD recorder plant as all these details were given at Panasonic of Germany`s press conference.

You are living in a fantasy world if you think DVD-RAM is dead. HP the US computer maker will in future add DVD-RAM recording to their desktop PC`s with recordable drives. As for home recorders, DVD-RAM is the best format thats why it`s got 65% of the Home Recorder market in Japan & USA. Only DVD-RAM can consign VHS to the history books. Time-Shifting, durability (100,000 rewrites) and editing flexibility cannot be matched by any other format. DVD-RAM is here to stay whether you like it or not. The E55 has been voted the best DVD recorder by "Which" and many other UK Video magazines.

The RRP for the ES10 in the USA is $249.99. I expect the UK price to be £199.99 with on-line retailers offering big discounts when supply becomes plentiful.
I can see the ES10 becoming the world`s 1st truly mass market DVD recorder. It might even kill off VHS.

I will buy the DMR-ES10 when it`s released in April, to add to my E50 & E55.
What`s particularly impressive about the new model is the that the sharpness/resolution in LP mode has been increased 100%. Also the ultra-quick start-up time of 1 second is out of this world!!!

DVD-ram is alive and kicking in the home recorder market. It still has over 50% market share(home recorders) in USA & Japan. Panasonic has made a wise move & the newly added multi format recording will make DVD-RAM recorders even more popular. The E55 is has received awards from various publications.
It`s only £169 in Boots & that`s the lowest price in the UK.
If you want to watch one programme while recording another on the same disc, then DVD-RAM is your only viable choice. Plus the editing flexibility is unmatched.

Brooktop, No. Because recordings usually last longer than scheduled on PDC, I`ve found that setting the finish time to 5 mins b4 the scheduled end time results in recordings finishing on time.
