DVD Recorder, I`m Confused!

Nick Shepherd (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 2nd March 2005, 10:30

At the risk of sounding stupid:

Need a DVD recorder to archive stuff recorded on SKY+. Have read reviews and the Sony GX300 (or something) gets the pludits as it has great playback too.

Now, they all go on about this model (and the panny E55) having great TV tuners, does this matter if you always use SKY, or am i really stupid?

Also, the reviews say up to 2 hours recording time at the highest level, but DVD`s can hole more than that i think, so if i`m just recording from SKY+ hard drice to DVD, will there still be a space limit at the higher quality???

Any help gratefully recieved!!

You can get 6 hours at the lowest quality, what setting you choose is a matter of preference.

I am happy enough with my 2 Mico`s, they do what it says on the tin, if you already have Sky+, you wouldn`t need to bother with machines that have timeslip capabilites IMO.

If we don`t take care of the customer, maybe they will stop bugging us.

The Panna 55 is about to be changed and Panna UK have none left. I do not know the details of the replacement yet. From what you say the tuner is not an issue.

All the best,

The 42%er.

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....

So the number of hours you can record is dictated by the DVD disc or the recorder? Does it save to a hard drive first then?

So not sure what to buy (again!)

righto, dvd 1-0-1- :) a standard single layer dvd disc can hold 2 hours of top quality video + sound, a dual layer disc can hold double (4 hours) all home dvd recorders currently only use single layer discs, so they get around the time limit by offering different quality settings, ie, the more time you want on the disc the lower the quality will be, i tend to use my panny`s 4 hour mode for tv stuff & the quality is generally very good, but if i`m doing a movie i`ll set it for the exact length of time the movies on for, thus getting the best picture poss :)

as for hard drives, i don`t think either of the machines you listed has one installed, but tbh if you have sky+ i wouldn`t worry about that :)

hope this helps.

Thats helpfull thanks Chris.

So the Sony GX300 (or something) which What HI FI loved, will be fine for just dumping sky+ recordings onto?

And as 42%er says, the quality of its tuner is not relevant if i use sky?

Cheers

that`ll do the job without breaking a sweat :) But it may be worth waiting for the new range of panasonic machines that are reported as being multi-format, if they get the price right & keep the unbeatable reliability of the older machines (mines an ancient DMR-E30, thats literally done thousands of discs without a single problem, apart from the odd dodgy disc) then these machines "should" be all conquering ;)

and as stated by 42%er the tuner is not really an issue for you`re main purpose, as i would imagine you will be connecting via scart ?

Thanks again Chris,

I think the Sony is multi format, it can play and record on all or most i belive??

Just thought of another thing, is it or can it multi region for playback, or do i need to find one that is multi region?

Cheers

Is this going to be region free/hackable without any extra stuff? What is the playback quality like on these Panasonic recordable units aqnd do they have RGB output over SCART?

I know this sounds like I`m being dense, sorry...
