RE: dvdsoon.com - Great prices and NOT SO great service!

I`ve ordered from them before, and have been impressed that they keep you informed about your order, and it was well packaged too. I had to create a new account when I changed my billing address though, as it doesn`t let you edit this. I made another order with them last week, and they are currently checking my ID for my new account. I`ve emailed them to explain the situation, and am waiting for them to get back to me, though I`m sure that they took a bit quicker the first time round to check ID.

RE: Discs to avoid like the plague!

The R2 release of Olivier`s "Richard III" which unfortunately seems to be the only one available. In every frame there are hundreds of white specks, and at times green distortion (lines and big blobs), there are one or two places where the picture jumps as well. The sound wasn`t as bad although there was constant hissing. The source seemed to be from a worn out vhs. I had to return it and get back the £11.99 I wasted on it. Shame really since it`s a great film, and someone ought to give it the treatment it deserves.

RE: DVD Player/Geriatric TV compatibility

I have an older tv too. You need an RF modulator which will set u back £20-30 at somewhere like Maplins, as connecting directly from the player to the tv won`t work.

RE: Buffy Season 2 (R1) for £34.99?

Yep it seems like it`s a trend for R1. The Friends R1 1st season box sets are also significantly cheaper than R2, which adds to the "are we getting ripped off in the UK" debate. I guess the only good thing is that we`re getting the releases early here.

RE: T2 - Judgement Day - Ultimate Edition (3 versions)

When I got mine it was an outer silver cardboard sleeve which looks metallic from a distance, and the back was virtually a carbon copy of the back of the sleeve in the inner casing.

RE: Where should I buy X-Files Season 5 from?

Just saw it for about £63 at PlayCentric, with the earlier ones just a tad cheaper, but I don`t know if they`re as customs friendly as dvdboxoffice. Otherwise I think that`s the best price I`ve seen it around for. Hope that helps!

RE: Where should I buy X-Files Season 5 from?

Thanks I never knew that! I always assumed they shipped directly from Canada, but taking a closer look at the packaging, it definitely has come through France.

Microstar P4 2GHz £799 at PC WORLD

Just noticed this in an ad, don`t know how good Microstar is, but here are the specs:

Intel P4 2.0GHz
256Mb DDR RAM
40Gb HD
DVD Rom/CD rewriter drives
64Mb GeForce 4 Graphics
TV out
56k Modem
Stereo Sound and Speakers
17" monitor
Software: Windows XP, Star Office

I have to say it`s very tempting..

RE: Where should I buy X-Files Season 5 from?

Noticed it was £66/67 at dvdboxoffice a coupla weeks ago, but again may be a risk.. not sure whether customs would get their mittens on it since it goes well above the limit.

RE: HMV new sale....

There are still a few bargains in the HMV sale if u really look... (plus if u have an NUS card u save 10% which basically pays for P&P)

Picked up "Cape Fear" and "Crimson rivers" 2 disc (play are selling it for £12.99 last time I looked) for £24

"Open Your Eyes" (£11.99 at play) and "Evil Dead 2" for £16

Other stuff I noticed "Monty Python Life Of Brian" £19..99 (£14.99 at play), Nightmare Before Christmas £15.99, Princess Mononoke (14.99 at play)

RE: Bagusdvd.tripod.com

I went to M`sia last summer, and it seems that they have a large pirate market over there. Stalls out in the streets sell quite a large range of pirated vcds for less than £1 and dvds for about £3/£4, and there is always someone on the lookout for police. Even proper shops sell these, and it`s sometimes hard to tell whether something is legit esp when the picture discs look genuine as well as the paper the cover is printed on. The government over there were trying to crackdown on this market, but apparantly the police could be bribed. I saw a few of the "raids" on market sellers, and the police didn`t even seem to be bothered, giving ample time for these sellers to pack up and make a run for it.

RE: Notting Hill

lol just gave that a go, track 3 on the r2 is French, the 2nd is for the hard of hearing, and the rest are other European languages (9 in total).. could be a fun way of learning new languages, but then again "Chitty chitty bang bang nous t`aimons beaucoup" doesn`t quite have the same ring! lol maybe these family films should come with ear plugs for parents to wear during the day! :) On the subject of "Toot sweets", the description on the back of the box is a bit of a groaner.. `definitely far "toot sweet" to miss`.

RE: Notting Hill

Cheers niteowl! I got the r2 version which doesn`t have the fun karaoke subtitle unfortunately, but I guess normal subtitles do the job too!! Still can`t get the title song out of my head! :)

RE: Notting Hill

It does sound funny that Cd-wow would get their stuff from anywhere!! lol sounds like old Del Boy is behind this! :-D

Was CCBB in widescreen by any chance? The R2 version is only in widescreen for the main titles and then goes to full frame.

I believe that if you sign up through a referral newsletter you only have to spend £5.01 to use the £5 off voucher.

That would be a much better deal, and would also explain why there are two contradicting references to the voucher under the "common questions" on the Safedoor website.

RE: 4 Disc LOTR at Play

Cheers for clearing it up!! I never knew there were gonna be two 4 disc editions.. gonna have to do some looking around methinks.

RE: 4 Disc LOTR at Play

The most notable difference is that the collector`s edition only features the theatrical version, while the 4 disc set additionally features an extended director`s cut which is about 30 minutes longer.

RE: Xbox Price cut

yea.. it usually takes an age for consoles to take that much of a drop in price.. it really is tempting..

lol Champ Mans what I`d get it for too. By all accounts the game appears pretty much identical to the PC version, except the player database is slighty smaller by a few thousand. The processor in the XBox puts my PC to shame.

RE: Goodfellas £7.99 (or £2.99 with Safe Door Voucher)

U have to spend at £15 to use the voucher, not a penny less. I signed up at the start of this month and this was already in effect.

RE: Simpsons series 1 region 1 £9.99

Well presumably the terms and conditions have changed, cos if u look under "common questions" on the safedoor homepage, there are 2 questions relating to the voucher, and 2 different terms under the headings:

What are the terms and conditions of my special CD-WOW & SafeDoor introductory voucher?
The voucher will expire 37 days from the date that your account is opened.
The minimum you can spend including the voucher is £5.01.

What are the terms and conditions for using my SafeDoor introductory voucher?
The voucher will expire 2 weeks from the date that your account is opened.
The minimum you can spend including the voucher is £15.

Now presumably the rules have changed, and it may have been an oversight on their part in not updating the first question regarding the use of the voucher. When I joined up, they gave me till 13th April to use the voucher, and attempting to use the voucher with just the 1 dvd for £14.99 resulted in the message that the order was under £15 and the voucher couldn`t be used. Also if u look on the cd-wow site the icon for opening a new safedoor account clearly states that u can only save £5 by spending £15.. so unfortunately those who open new accounts don`t quite have as good a deal as the one you outlined.. presumably u joined just before they changed it..

RE: Simpsons series 1 region 1 £9.99

no.. u have to spend at least £15 not a penny less.. I tried ordering Mulholland Dr which was £14.99. but it was less than £15 and I couldn`t use the voucher. Couldn`t find another dvd I really wanted so I chose the cheapest cd I could find which unfortunately was the last Spice Girls album for £3.99. Still saved on what I originally planned to spend on the dvd though.

RE: Current problem with Play?

Yea, they do seem to take a bit longer these days. Just for instance, I ordered "Labyrinth" r2 off them last week and it took them 2 1/2 days to send it whereas they used to send it out the very day you placed the order by recorded mail. Sometimes it`s a little longer.

A couple of months back I tried to order the "Requiem For A Dream" soundtrack off them which was in stock. I waited for a whole week and they still had not processed the order. It was still at the "order taken" stage, so I cancelled it and picked up the cd down HMV for the same price in a sale. Needless to say I started looking elsewhere after that, and only use play if it`s the best deal (which it mostly is for r2 dvds). But for r1 you can save a few quid by getting them imported most of the time.

RE: Kevin Smith Jersey Trilogy £30

Delivery time is usually about 7 days, and its usually marked down as "gift", which should allow for the value of up to £36 before customs intervene judging from other people`s comments. It`s a shame cos some box sets are cheaper overseas, but there should be no problem there.

RE: Current problem with Play?

yea I noticed for my order they haven`t sent it recorded.. maybe they`re cutting costs by not including the bargain items or something these days.

RE: Current problem with Play?

Do they still send r2 dvds by recorded post? It used to be that u could click on the number in your order history, and that was very handy to keep track.

RE: dvdboxoffice delivery times

Usually about 7 days, though right now I`m waiting for one part of an order which had been shipped 13 days ago, the other one arrived on tuesday even though both were shipped on the same day. My last few orders have taken at least 10 days. I think there`s been a problem with the postal service (or lack of) round my area these last couple of weeks so that may have contributed to that.

Generally though a reliable 7 days.

RE: DvdPlanet

nope, the one I was on about is US based, at http://www.dvdplanet.com

RE: DvdPlanet

Cheers for the info!! :) I think I might give them a miss for the timebeing since I`m waiting for other stuff to come through

RE: goonies reg1 or 2?

According to imdb, the UK version was cut by 16 seconds to get the PG rating.. so I went for r1

DvdPlanet

Hi there,

Has anyone had any experience with dvdplanet? Basically when u first order from them u have to send/scan a copy of your credit card billing statement showing your address in order to "minimise fraud", which is fair enough I guess although it sounds a bit on the dodgy side. They sent me a mail asking me to do this. But I was wondering if it was worth following up on. Is dvdplanet reputable/reliable? Thanks!

Regards,
Eugene
