RE: Im devastated and my heads in bits...
Dunno what to say that could help mate. You do deserve an explanation, anyone would, but unfortunately I don`t think you`re gonna get one or at least not a truthful one. Be careful because she may be confusing you on purpose and then she will blame you for it when you try to find answers from her. It is hard but if you walk away you will still have your pride, try to get your best mates to help you through this or better still a female friend, if she doesn`t really know her, or a female cousin.
Women, they fk you up, but you still want to fk them.
Take care
RE: Rude Road/Place names near you.
Had similar to everyone else, but there are a few near me (Colchester) which it missed
Burnt Dick Hill
Hornigals Lane
RE: Triple Boris Karloff £3.22 at Ezy
The third movie is the black cat. Unfortuntately the Raven isn`t the Vincent Price version as the packaging alludes to. The transfers are obviously NTSC to PAL conversions but overall good for the price.
RE: The Wicker Man: Another version to buy?
"But most importantly, the US and UK extended versions are both quoted as 99 minutes - does that mean the UK version is actually 4 minutes longer than the US one (allowing for the PAL speedup)?"
The extended version R2 disc is just a real-time ntsc to pal conversion of the anchor bay disc, so there is no pal speed-up. There is however slightly jerky movement and a softer picture due to this.
The theatrical version has been correctly mastered from a print and has pal speed-up making it shorter than the anchor bay version.
"The Directors Cut is taken from the Corman print, which is the only copy of the extended version of the film still in existence."
I don`t see how this could be true as the R2 version (same as the R1) has a note at the beginning of the film saying it has been mastered from an old analogue tape.
The "drector`s cut" is still missing the scene where Willow goes into Howie`s room after her famous scene.
RE: Anchor Bay does it again!!!
There was a discussion about this release at SGM, from the anchor bay specs it seems they are repackaging the discs that are already available in the uk :(
I hope that is wrong
RE: What DVD distributors guarantee quality in picture and sound?
" Is it just me or are all Anchor bay region 2`s a bit or even a lot on the soft side picture quality wise."
Unfortunately this is due to them doing NTSC to PAL conversions from their US discs rather than using a proper PAL master on some of their releses. I noticed it with House, Haloween (tv edit I think) and Nosferatu. Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue doesn`t have this problem but is *very* dark in places. Anchor Bay US discs are usually very good so I hope their UK branch gets the quality up.

RE: Discs to avoid like the plague!
Specters (R2 Donald Pleasance) is really bad, bought it one afternoon on a 2 for 1 in Woolworths, another one where the DVD has been mastered from a very worn out vhs.
The Tartan release of NOTLD is quite bad and has ghosting throughout, the more recent release with both B&W and Colour versions is a lot better. Though every release of NOTLD and Day Of The Dead that I have seen has suffered from being an NTSC to PAL conversion.
RE: outlook express has gone t**s up
I`ve been using mozilla for the last few months as my default browser instead if IE6, it is very good. The only problem I`ve had with it is trying to search on the bbfc website, had to resort back to IE for that one.
RE: Looking for region 1 DVD`s in Italian
Hello David,
Italian isn`t a language the region 1 market caters for (only English, French and Spanish) so if you want titles that are dubbed in Italian the only advice is really to get a multi-region player. I know this probably isn`t what you were hoping for but that`s the way it is.

RE: Anybody use DvdCopyPlus?
Why not go to http://www.doom9.org and get some proper backup software. If you just want to make SVCDs why not try DVDx, it`s free. And should you get stuck, there is a forum there which is helpful if you are prepared to put some effort in yourself.
fulci going cheap
Just saw the following at http://www.futureent.com/ strange thing is they are charging exactly the same to buy them separately. A bargain methinks, but alas my wallet is already strained this month so I only ordered the first collection.
Lucio Fulci Collection 1 - The House By the Cemetery/The Beyond (1984) - Lucio Fulci £17.99 Released: June 11, 2002
Lucio Fulci Collection 2 - New York Ripper/Manhattan Baby - Lucio Fulci £17.99 Released: June 11, 2002
Lucio Fulci Collection 3 - City of the Living Dead/ Don`t Torture a Duckling - Lucio Fulci £17.99 Released: June 11, 2002
If only the Argento one`s were at this price too.

RE: Superbit Region 2 DVD, any good?
In my honest opinion Superbit is a con and a way to make consumers pay more for less.
1) Any increase in picture quality is due to better transfer methods, not giving extra bitrate. They should be using good transfers methods anyway.
2) Increaing the bitrate doesn`t cost anything during production, a matter of changing 1 setting in whatever hardware or software encoder they use. They should use appropriate settings whatever title they produce.
3) They are saving money by not having to pay royalties on extras
RE: other operating systems
@ Bill
I think you are being a little unfair to linux, new versions from the likes of Mandrake, etc, are as easy to install as Windows and a lot of work has been done to make desktop versions which are very easy to configure. I don`t see why you imply that it has lots of security holes compared to Windows, this is simply not true.
As for myself I use both Windows 2000 and Linux Mandrake 8.1, both perform well and I have had few problems with either.

RE: WTF is a MP43 Decompressor?
Yes, it`s Microsoft`s MPEG4 codec V3, but they banned it`s use in avi files after a few builds so they could force their asf and wmv formats onto us. As many people quite liked to use it in their avis it got hacked and became DivX with this silly restriction removed.
To play it back install ffdshow.exe from http://cutka.szm.sk/xvid/xvid.html and remember to tick MP43 on it`s configuration. This handy little thing plays back most MPEG4 formats.
RE: half decent b movies £4.99
I saw a shop in Colchester the other day that was selling these at 3 for £10. I was thinking of getting Grim Reaper, Beyond the Door II (daria nicolodi) but thought that they`d probably be terrible transfers.
RE: VHS - to videoCD
Myself I use a standard WinTV Go (about £40) and a bunch of freeware applications to process and encode the video. (http://www.doom9.org) It all depends on what quality you need to get, the problem with a direct encode is that the ammount of noise in your video can make the picture very blocky. Also if capturing to your P.C. it is best to have about 10 or 20gb free for an hours capture.
American Werewolf in London cut?
I bought the new R2 dvd last week and got the feeling that some of the shots of Jenny Agutter had been cut from the film compared to a VHS version I saw some years ago. On another forum
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21477
someone else is thinking the same. Can anyone confirm?
RE: subdividing region 2
i too have noticed that less and less UK R2 releases have anything but an English soundtrack. I for one like the idea of multiple languages and have imported some titles for this reason alone.
RE: Which "obscure" films would you like to see on DVD?
Agree with School for Scoundrels and the Price / Corman thingy (got a few of these on r1) though I wouldn`t count these as particularly obscure. More from Cushing and Lee in general would be nice. Others:
La Double Vie de Véronique
Body Stealers
La Fuente de la Edad
I`d also like to see the complete Jess Franco but I wouldn`t buy them all unless I got a really good deal.
RE: Solaris : dubbed soundtrack flicks to subs
I got this one a few weeks ago, I was bored in MVC at lunchtime. Turned out to be a good film so I was glad I bought it. Anyway, I watched it in Russian, but I did try out the dubbed version and I seem to remember the same thing when he was in the room with the message on the t.v. screen.
I don`t see why this film is spread over 2 discs though, yeah it`s long but not that long. You can easily fit 3 / 4 hours of high quality video on a dual layer disc and this film isn`t exactly going to demand a lot of bitrate for the video.
RE: Evil Dead Book Of The Dead R1 vs R2
The current r1 version is in the original 4:3 aspect ratio whereas the current r2 is in a faux 16:9 format. The r1 version is being replaced with a 16:9 version like r2 and the r2 version is going to be replaced by a special edition in "book of the dead" packaging.
RE: Hammer
I too was disappointed with this release (along with Dracula P.O.D.) I think the effect you are talking about is called alaising, where an object appears and disappears when moving between pixels, instead of a smooth transition. This was probably not helped by the 2.35:1 picture not even being anamorphic.
Still a good film though :)
RE: Help needed with progressive scan :)
You`ve got me wondering,
NTSC DVDs are mostly progressive 23.976 fps with a flag in the mpeg stream so it will play telecined at 29.970 fps whereas PAL DVDs are mostly 25 fps progressive.
I take it that progressive scan plays the DVD at 23.976 fps and then output it to the TV like this, the tv then plays each frame progressively, not as 2 half fields. Wouldn`t this cause the picture to flicker due to the very low refresh rate or does the tv play it the progressive image interlaced? Can someone explain?
RE: Anyone got Wicker Man region one, Whats the quality like?????? thanks.
RE "The cropped version you speak of is the one that is on VHS (pagh). You may get to see the tops of people`s heads in the panned and scammed version but this was not how it was originally seen."
Hiya there
What I was saying was that the VHS version currently available hasn`t been cropped / pan & scanned. It is the full screen format of this film as it was shot, and I expect what the cameraman / director saw when he framed each scene. Though I agree with you that it may have been shown in (a cropped) widescreen version when shown at the cinema. Anyway I notice that amazon say there are 2 versions going to be released but they don`t give any details. I think Lee did the commentary at the beginning of the month, this should make interesting listening.
peace
RE: Do Warner Bros do nice packaging for R1 or R4?
I`ve got about 8 Warner Discs (most are 2.35:1 anamorphic) and have to say that the picture quality on all of them is fine.
RE: Need help cooking my 18lb turkey!
re: chop both its feet off, rip out its innards, strip it, shove an onion up its arse and bung it in a very hot place for four hours until its completely burnt.
When will Bottom (the series) )make it onto DVD.
---And another sprout.
RE: Anyone got Wicker Man region one, Whats the quality like?????? thanks.
I`ve got the Limited Edition version in a wooden box (quite tacky actually) which features the standard cut version and not-quite-uncut extended version. The picture quality is fine, except that both versions have had the top and bottom of the picture cropped away so they are now widescreen (compare it to a VHS version). Some scenes look quite terrible with the tops of people`s heads missing, etc. Britt Ekland`s night scene suffers a lot also.
The scene where Willow visits the Sgt the morning after her invititation is strangley missing from the extended version when it is in the standard version. The disc doesn`t approach anything like a definitive version which I hoped it would be :(
I would wait a while as Warner will be releasing a UK version in February with commentary from Lee himself. I hope this film will one day get a decent release.
(end of rant)

RE: Anyone want a £5 Amazon voucher
thought this was against the forum rules as simon is just refering you to amazon, enabling himself to profit from the venture.
