RE: My Widescreen is not widescreen? Please help

The edges of the image look curved? I`m not sure what can be done about that, maybe another member of the forum could be of some help.

Sorry,
Adam.

RE: My Widescreen is not widescreen? Please help

OK, when your watching "normal" TV, set your television to 4:3 (the standard image size).

The picture on "normal" TV will look more distorted then it did on your original TV, this is due to the much sharper display.

Regards,
Adam.

RE: My Widescreen is not widescreen? Please help

You say "normal channels not going through Sky", so i`m assuming you mean the 5 terrestrial channels, which are NOT bradcast in widescreen. To view BBC 1. BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 in widescreen, you must watch them through Sky.

Regards,
Adam.

RE: My Widescreen is not widescreen? Please help

In the `Picture Settings` menu on the Sky EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) set `Picture Format` to 16:9 and `Scart Control` to ON.

Your TV should also have several viewing modes, for example: 4:3, 16:9, Zoom, Cinema and Auto etc. What you need to do, is to set your TV to it`s "Auto" mode, this is so the TV will automatically switch from 16:9 to 4:3, depending on the format of the content being presented.

If you do that it should work correctly.

You also said that an inch of the picture is missing off each side of the image. When using RGB scart, unfortunately, the picture seems to be offset to the left, but don`t worry about it, everyone has to live with this problem.

Regards,
Adam.

RE: My Widescreen is not widescreen? Please help

Films encoded with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 will still show black bars at the top and bottom of your television weather or not it is widescreen, this is so the original aspect ratio is preserved.

Films with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, however, will fill the whole of your widescreen TV, but black bars at the top and bottom would be visible on a standard sized TV, again, this is so that the original aspect ratio is preserved.

Of course, both these ratios are still shown on none 16:9 Anamorphic DVDs, which means the video will be in the 4:3 (1.33:1) Letterbox format or the "16:9 Letterbox" format.

So, DVDs which state "Anamorphic Widescreen", "16:9 Enhanced" or simply "16:9" as some do, will show correctly on your widescreen TV, as long as your DVD player and TV are set to 16:9.

Regards,
Adam.

RE: Pan & Scan

It is the actual DVD player that puts the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is so that the original aspect ratio is preserved, though some detail in picture quality is lost. Unless the actual DVD comes with both 16:9 and 4:3 "Pan & Scan" versions (e.g. Big Daddy) there isn`t anything you can do about it.

DVDs with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 shouldn`t look too bad, DVDs with the ratio 2.35:1 will probably look "very" small, depending on the size of your TV set.

RE: TV Problem

Thanks for the advice, i`ll pass it on to him.

TV Problem

My brother put a pair of speakers next to his TV that aren't shielded, and obviously it will damage the screen. In the bottom right corner, the colour is slightly distorted. Is there anything he can do about it?

Cheers
Adam

RE: RGB problem

Grundig Digiboxes do output an RGB signal.

RE: Troubles with Widescreen TV

OK... the only other thing that i think you could be seeing is the scan lines, again, that's normal, you can see them when you look closely at the screen...

If you have any, try playing an NTSC DVD, if the problem you are experiencing stays the same kind of problem but increases, then yes, it will be the scan lines you are seeing… Make any sense?

RE: is dts a lot better than ggood old dolby digital

Must do... I`m assuming those films where originally mixed with a Dolby Stereo soundtrack, so I thought they just remixed the original 4-channel soundtrack into a 5.1 mix.

Predator, which has just been released on DVD, also has a DTS soundtrack as well, and the original film certainly never had one.

I don`t see the point in mixing an additional soundtrack just because it may sound a tiny bit better... what`s wrong with just one good Dolby 5.1 mix?

Adam

RE: Troubles with Widescreen TV

If you mean the picture looks a little grainy then that is normal, the picture quality on a DVD is very good, but it isn`t perfect.

You will notice defects in the quality of the video easier if you look at the screen closely!

Adam

RE: is dts a lot better than ggood old dolby digital

Well that just about explains it all!

RE: is dts a lot better than ggood old dolby digital

How come T2 has a DTS soundtrack.... I thought DTS wasn`t around back then, or has the CDS soundtrack from the film been remixed to create a DTS one?... I could be wrong all together!

Adam

RE: What are the best ten movies to exploit my 5.1 system????

Jurassic Park - DTS? I haven't heard the DTS soundtrack myself, but I read in this article (Dolby Vs. DTS) that the Dolby Digital soundtrack on the region 1 DVD clearly outperforms the DTS soundtrack! However, I can't say anything myself because I haven't heard both soundtracks - only the DD version.

Adam.

RE: white noise

What exactly do you mean by "white noise"?

RE: are there any other saddos like me out there?!?!

Star Wars?... They all look the same to me!

Episode 1 has to be one of the worst movies ever! Sorry!

RE: Shawshank Widesceen from Cinema Club a CON????

Your right, the "16:9 Anamorphic" version on side B has been cropped! I`ve only just noticed myself, when i first saw the menu for side B I thought it was just zoomed in to save time etc, and thought nothing more when the film started because it looked alright.

Adam

Yamaha Receiver Power Cut

I was sat down watching my R1 copy of "Behind Enemy Lines" in Dolby Digital, when all of a sudden, the receiver switches itself off, this is about half way through the film, at a quiet moment by the way.

Seen as it`s never done this before i thought i would just ask what could have gone wrong!

My receiver is a Yammy RXV396....Any Ideas?

RE: Dolby Pro-Logic on Yamaha Receiver

So i`m not the only person with this problem! I think i`ll e-mail Yamaha asking them about this issue.

RE: Dolby Pro-Logic on Yamaha Receiver

I`ve tried everything, but nothing seems to work!

Dolby Digital sounds fine too, but Pro-Logic sounds crap!

Gale Centre 10
Aiwa SX-NAV75 Main Speakers

I know these arne`t the best speakers, but they sound good when listening to Dolby Digital meterial.

Dolby Pro-Logic on Yamaha Receiver

When listening to Dolby Surround meterial, either from DVD, Video or TV broadcasts, the centre channel hardly packs any bass, thus music etc doesn`t sound very good at all.

It`s OK with Dolby Digital meterial because the centre channel is used mainly for dialogue.

My receiver is a Yamaha RXV396. Can anyone help me on this please?

RE: Sky Box Office

The only time i plug the Digibox into the phone line is when i order a film or use TV banking, other than that its always disconnected, i still manage to get the bill though, although recently i haven`t been getting bills for some movies, i know the letter takes time to come but it`s been a awful long time (months).

What do you mean by your viewing card is full? I haven`t a clue!

Speaker Balence

The left front speaker on my set-up sounds slightly quieter to the right speaker, i`ve checked the balence on the amp and even re-wired the speakers, still no change.

I think it could be the tweeter in the speaker thats had it, i would just like to make sure thats all before i go out and buy a new pair, any ideas?

Adam

RE: Sky Box Office

My Grundig Digibox doesn`t let me order a Box Office presentation if the box isn`t connected to the phone line, i assume it`s the same with all Digiboxes.

RE: Jeepers Creepers R3, for your information....

But don`t Columbia TriStar`s Superbit DVDs also include a Dolby Digital soundtrack?, surely a full bitrate DTS soundtrack wouldn`t also fit on...would it?

Adam.
