Pan & Scan

My girlfriend (honest) is buying a DVD before she can afford to upgrade her telly, is there a recommended DVD player which would show widescreen films as fullscreen (i.e.chop off left and right) - as letterbox format will look quite small on the exiting TV?

It is the actual DVD player that puts the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is so that the original aspect ratio is preserved, though some detail in picture quality is lost. Unless the actual DVD comes with both 16:9 and 4:3 "Pan & Scan" versions (e.g. Big Daddy) there isn`t anything you can do about it.

DVDs with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 shouldn`t look too bad, DVDs with the ratio 2.35:1 will probably look "very" small, depending on the size of your TV set.
