Sad indeed. I am sure many in my area do not share the sentiment however as I live north of the border but purely based on talent big loss to the game (assuming this will be him finished) and of course England, though not sure exactly how much of an influence he would have been (allowed to) be this Summer.

He showed the other night against Man U however that despite his ageing years and undoubted loss of pace the skills are still there as is the ability to create half a yard to whip the ball in and most importantly the quality of most of the balls he whipped in were top drawer - better quality finishers would have buried at least 2 of them.

Despite the now ( then as well I guess) infamous `stupid boy` sending off in 1998 total model professional on and ( well nearly) off, marred a bit with the U.S. vs England/Milan panto of recent years and obviously the marriage stuff but still someone many young aspiring players look up to for the right reasons.

Bottom line for me is 2 minutes to go, goal down, free kick 20-25 yards left of centre. Who do you want to see with the ball?
Beckham?
Lampard?
Gerrard?
Any Cole?

No contest.

That read a bit like an obituary!

cheers

I dont actually see it as that major a loss TBH

What it may serve to do is take pressure off the "new era" as they won`t have him sat on the bench with every journo in the stadium posied with pen and paper ready to write how SWP/TW/JM/DB etc etc should have made way for Beckham blah blah blah if they didnt have the best of games

I wrote that post before I then went and heard at least one ex-england international (John Barnes) and other pundits suggesting the same thing - ie that him not being there will take pressure of the youngsters who will be playing in those positions

So obviously I know nothing on that basis

Beckham wasn;t even going to be a guaranteed starter, infact almost nailed on to be warming the bench so of course I would suggest it is fairly obvious that my suggestion holds water - I;d love to know why you think it doesnt

Anyhow, why dont you just give up taking pot shots at me and actually find something constructive to write once in a while

If you do maybe I`ll once again take up to trying to hold a debate with you.

Otherwise, I shall simply revert to how its been for probably a year now where I`ll just ignore your pithy attempts at being funny or intellectual (but of course never biased or blinkered - yea right!!) and when I do come on merely respond to the civilised members of this forum

I don`t think we have a good enough out and out winger for the right anyway. Not sure Becks could manage all the games but would have been nice to see him on the bench.

I don`t think any of the new lot have got the consistency as for SWP I don`t think he has the class. TW seems much to over-hyped and loved by the media espec end product is weak. AL has been injured i think and not in form.

Also can I start and unoffical thread no idea why just seems like more fun than an official one.

You`re a country mile off there, rvshah. ;)
Prior to his (worrying) injury, Aaron Lennon was in phenomenal form.
So much so that Tottenham`s results took a nosedive when he went out.
Aaron Lennon has become a much more finished article in the past year.

Assuming the likes of Lennon et al are fit, I actually think England have a very good chance of at least making the final this time around.
I can`t imagine them winning it being anything other than depressing though, as it`s rammed down everyone`s throats for years to come.
Not that I`ll watch a single game of the WC, as I`m not interested.
But doesn`t change the fact I think England have the means to go all the way.
