Same here,my Sister has been selling and buying for two years and never had a problem, but me I just buy and cant seem to put my numbers in to become a seller and now Im thinking about setting up a paypal account using my debit card to pay quicker but is it safe?
It`s a problem for me.
I use e-bay for buying and selling, and I do have a Paypal account.
My credit card was hit when dvdpacific`s server was hacked and I had to cancel it.
A few days later I had an e-mail ostensibly from e-bay saying that they couldn`t verify my details (or something) and could I reply entering my password etc.
I passed on the e-mail to e-bay who confirmed it as a spoof. They say you should never respond to such messages. They don`t come from e-bay.
But it did make we wonder. I assumed that it was the act of cancelling my credit card which provoked the e-mail. Someone presumably knew I was an e-bayer and that my credit card had been cancelled. Curious. Perhaps it was just a coincidence. It just makes me a little nervous about e-bay`s security.
I`ve recently switched over to Ebid to sell. The great thing about Ebid is that it is free to list and there are no final value fees. Used Ebid for 3 weeks now and made over £50 profit. If the same items were sold on ebay I would have made about a fiver less.
Ebid has less viewers, but this often leads to greater bargains. I got a brand new pentium 4 laptop with DVD writer for £250. Like ebay you just make sure the feedback is reasonable when purchasing.
The thing I like most about it is that you can list an item, and have it automatically relist itself for upto 10 weeks. That means your item can be advertised for free for up to 100 days automatically. If it sells you get the whole lot, no listing fees and no final value fees.
Another excellent feature about Ebid is that you can have your feedback changed by contacting the ops if someone leaves lies about you. I have emailed them on several occassions and recieved personal replies instantly. Ebay never replied to me in person ever and after years of giving them payment, I thought s0d them, why should they get my money. When they included VAT into their pay structure, that was the last straw.
Every day is a free listing day at Ebid. http://www.ebid.co.uk/

Been using eBay since 99 no probs to date :)
As for the card details as far as I remember you only need to register a card and not a bank account, maybe things have changed now?
Axe-man, I tend to get about 4 eBay spoofs a day on various e-mail accounts I have, you cancelling your card I reckon had absolutely nothing to do with it as these spoofers target everybody even those who don't even have an eBay account in the vain hope that some naïve person will enter their details. Spoofs are very easy to tell apart but people still get taken in by them. There is a help section on the eBay boards for spoofs and how to tell them apart. Best of luck if you do sign up and word of advice, don't use direct debit with eBay as apparently they lose your forms repeatedly. :/

You`re probably right and I`m just being paranoid, but I think it was the first such "spoof" (sounds so innocuous) that I`ve received, and the timing of it seemed strange.

Oh no they are not, they do look like real Ebay emails!! It`s only when you check the senders details that you realise that it`s more likely a spoof email. That`s why people fill in their details.
Ebay does it`s best to inform people when signing up NOT to respond to any emails that ask for specific data such as credit card details and passwords as Ebay will never request these details in emails.
It is easy to see how people forget this and respond to the spoof emails simply because they think that they will be `kicked off` Ebay for not replying within the given time limit.
But in response to `Is Ebay safe?` Is any site watertight? No! :o
hi,ive been using ebay for 4 months now and have bought and sold 300 items.i have already had 3 problems with goods not turning up.when chased up the sellers were no longer registered users.2 were americans.luckily i paid through paypal using my credit card.paypal were no help at all and said there was nothing they could do.ebay the same.thankfully egg got in on the act and i got my money back from them.always pay by credit card.dont even send a cheque because ebay is full of bloody criminals trying to pull a fast one.these people had excellent feedback until after id made the purchases, then it was too late.you tend to meet some right twa*s if you do the selling, and never leave feedback first.give it a try, people really will buy anything.cheers.
