Cd-Wow no customs

Paul Chandler (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 24th February 2003, 13:52

After reading some negative views on cd-wow products being charged by customs I just wished to show that the situation may well have improved. I ordered the Sopranos series 1 region one (16:9 and 5.1 unlike region 2) it cost 44.99 and arrived with no customs charge. I have never had any real problems with Cd wow and am well pleased with my Sopranos set.

I`ve just received a copy of Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (Criterion Collection -Region 1) which cost 21.99 from CD-Wow and haven`t been charged anything by customs.
Having said that, my original order didn`t turn up.
So customs normally charge for anything over 18 quid?

Yep, that`s the way it`s supposed to go - if something comes in from outside the EU, it`s limited to £18 for merchanside or £36 for a personal gift (indicated on the customs label).
Sending packages inside the EU (and EEA??) you aren`t limited to any amount. So there are no worries if ordering boxsets etc from Germany, France, Holland, etc.
That said, people sometimes don`t get stung on >£18 orders coming from outside the EU, but it`s a gamble and one which you have to figure out if it`s worth doing (i.e., sometimes even with a customs charge added it`s cheaper than getting something locally).

Can`t someone challenge this as a restriction of the free market, or argue that its an archaic law that predates the internet. Could`nt the companies tick gift and say that we send them money as a way of ensuring a free gift of a DVD which costs £25. They probably don`t come under english law anyway.

Lets start the campaign now for changing the customes charging laws.

the whole point of customs is to protect our economy, if all goods that are cheaper abroad were brought abroad than our economy would suffer, loss of lobs etc cus nobody is buying goods in this country.

On a personal level it stinks, of course, but i don`t think you are going to be able to change customs laws.

Cd-Wow send within the EU now (Sweden) so you will NOT be charged customs when ordering from them ever again.
