ouch, I'll probably spend that much on a camera!

Need to do some more googling, but the problem is the lens cover, not shutter, I knew what I meant (you can see why I haven't gone DSLR ;) )
taking it apart so far hasn't helped, but something else I read looked promsing that I can in theory take apart the cover with a stanley knife and see if there's a little dent stopping the thing sliding all the way.

I've found the Panasonic dmc-f3 the missus used to use, and the dmc-s5 that you fixed, so I'll take all 3 out today and see which annoys me the least :) See, I knew it was good to be a hoarder!

Although I must be getting old as I had to reread this thread to remind myself why they were at the back of a drawer :)

Just realised that was the dmc-s3 which made funny noises :)

The f3 has 2 black splodges on the screen :( luckily it's the LCD screen so photos are OK the s5 HSS the annoying splodges on the photo :(

Maybe I should take up speed drawing instead?

I bought a Canon Ixus 185. There's not much choice round the £100 mark these days, the other cameras at this price point were available last time I was looking a year or so ago, this seemed to be the only new camera in this price range, I guess as mobile cameras improve, and there's the assumption most ppl who want a simple point and click will be happy with their phone.

Anyway, I'm happy with this camera, it's simple to use, takes photos quick enough so that I can grab it and take a a quick photo of the girls while they are moving.

Out of curiosity I took some photos outside of "still life", with my cheap phone, and this camera, and the ones with the camera are much better, so glad I didn't just make do with my phone.

I also went for the option 2 yr accidental damage for £15 this time. Got it in John Lewis, they extend the manufactures guarantee to 2 years anyway, but as I was so annoyed with dropping and breaking the old one, thought I'd pay for accidental, especially as as the girls get more adventurous with their climbing etc now, I do sometimes have to put the camera down in a hurry as they are about to fall/realise they are stuck :)

images below you can probably tell which is which, I had to resize the camera one slightly as it's about the 5mb limit

You can tell without even zooming in, can't you. Physics is against us, it doesn't matter how good mobile phones get, the sensor size and lens in front of it will never be able to compete.

Aye, people just view photos on their phones/tablets now, they don't even care about printing them out. Anyone who does has probably gone DSLR.

I still find it amusing watching people taking holiday snaps with an iPad though.
