I think basically any compact camera made in the last 3 years by a major manufacturer of cameras is going to be fine for you picture quality wise. The limiting factor will always be the optics and sensor size, and I think they are pretty close to the limits of physics so you need to pick the minimum of key stats you care about.

Which from reading seems to be fastest start up and lowest shutter lag.

thanks, yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head, and have confirmed what I was thinking.

I think I'll go for the Sony DSCWX350 , but we'll see what I read at lunch time ;)

arrggghh I started to lean towards the Canon sx610, and now I'm reading about the Nikon Coopix s7000 £147.30

maybe I'll pop into an actual shop and look at real ones, I may even get lucky and find some-one who knows what they're talking about in John Lewis or Currys ;)

Sounds like a plan, if specs and reviews aren't helping you, then how it feels in your hand might.

midweek I "spoke" to an advisor on Jessop's site, he recommeded the Sony due to build quality, but didn't really elaborate or go into details of pros and cons of others

so after work tonight I went to the Currys near me where my Aunt works, she got the camera guy for me, we had a little chat about what a I want the camera for, he suggested the Canon SX610 as he said the pic quality was the best, and it was easiest to use, and had a good zoom, he aid the Sony WX350 would be he second choice.

So, I bought the Canon SX610, battery is still charging, so not used it yet, had a quick go in the shop, just able to see that it starts up and takes a photo quickly, they had the others on display in the shop but you couldn't turn them on.

I'll let you know how I get on.

looks like red eye reduction is good, but not so sure about the "rabbit caught in headlights" reduction ;)

btw what's the max size image you can upload? I had to resize a couple fo time in paint before it would allow upload

it's less than 10mb, must be around 5

all I wanted to do was scale down 50% paint is fine for that, gimp would be overkill.

A mate of mine spends all day every day using photoshop, years ago I got him to give me a quick overview/tutorial, I got home opened it, closed it again, haven't tried since :)

Dropped the Canon sx610 he yesterday ('luckily' when home from hols) now sometimes black screen, shutter won't close completely, sometimes let's me take a photo or two, before saying ''lens error will shut down automatically' or
'A camera error was detected
Will shut down automatically restart camera
E32'

I think I need a new compact camera again:( I still would rather have a phone and camera, my cheap phone is a bit crap for photos :(

If it makes you feel any better, a few months ago my Sigma 50mm prime lens suddenly started heavily over-exposing every shot, then I discovered the reason why. The iris was very sticky and not closing. :/

Cost me £100 to have Sigma repair it.

It is about 8 years old though, and probably my most heavily used lens, so I don't begrudge it too much.
